Happy Birthday, Paul Adler
There aren’t many people who can say they built something that outlived trends, outlasted generations, and still shows up every single day in the lives of the people it serves. You did.
Back in 1974, when scuba was still rough around the edges and the idea of a “dive community” wasn’t something you could just Google or buy into, you opened the doors to what would become East Coast Divers. Not just a shop. A hub. A proving ground. A place where people walked in curious and walked out changed.
For nearly four decades, you didn’t just run a business, you shaped a culture. You introduced thousands of divers to the water. You built careers. You built friendships. You built confidence in people who had no idea what they were capable of yet.
And you did it the hard way. Before online bookings. Before social media. Before any of this was "easy".
What we’ve taken on since 2012 is more than a shop. It’s a responsibility. Every class we run, every diver we train, every trip we lead carries a bit of your fingerprint on it whether people realize it or not.
From Alex, from me, and from everyone who’s been lucky enough to be part of this team over the years, thank you. For the standard you set. For the stubbornness to keep it going. For building something real.
We’re still here because of you. And we’re doing everything we can to make sure it keeps earning that name.
Happy Birthday, old man.
