The Task Force To Reimagine Policing in Brookline

The Task Force To Reimagine Policing in Brookline The Task Force to Reimagine Policing in Brookline was created to explore, recommend, and begin to bu The Task Force is chaired by Raul Fernandez.

The members of the Task Force are Kimberley Richardson, Malcolm Cawthorne, Kristan Singleton, ChiChi Wu, Almas Dosas, Alexander Weinstein, Anne Weaver, Bonnie Bastien, Eitan Hersh, and Michael Sandman. We are community members, activists, teachers, BHA residents, and elected officials. We want to hear the community’s thoughts about Brookline’s current model of public safety so that together we can

propose an alternative approach which works for everyone. We believe that everyone should have a say in how public safety is provided to our communities. If you are a Brookline resident and have opinions or experiences you'd like to share about our current police-based form of public safety in Brookline, or if you have thoughts on better ways to provide public safety beyond the police department, please reach out to us via the contact info provided. You are welcome to request to speak directly with anyone of the Task Force members you feel most comfortable with. We will be able to keep your input anonymous if you state that need. We are working to evaluate specific BPD programs, examine the overview of the BPD, and imagine alternatives to make our communities a safer place for everyone. We seek to lift up the voices that are not being heard, interrogate the existing power structures, and build community. Please connect with us. Share your thoughts and experiences. Bring your ideas of public safety to the table so that we can imagine better possibilities and begin to build them together.

“We don’t need to “reimagine policing.”

We need to examine the meaning of “public safety.”

Billions upon billions are spent on policing & we are not safe.

Housing is safety. Healthcare is safety. Funding things that actually prevent social instability & conflict is safety.”

This is a great on Our America with Julian Castro podcast episode on how effective and revolutionary a CAHOOTS model for crisis intervention can be. The Task Force is trying to make this happen in Brookline. Let's make Brookline a model for how to create public safety for all residents.
If you have doubts, please give this a listen and reach out to anyone on the Task Force with your concerns and questions.

The Task Force to Reimagine Policing in Brookline met for six months to meet the charge approved by our Select Board: to use a data-informed approach to interrogate our current model and provide a distinctly alternative approach to public safety.

As you can see in the executive summary (linked below) of our report, we unanimously recommend a shift of resources away from the Police Department’s Community Service Division to a more appropriate, robust, and impactful social service agency that we’re calling Brookline Forward.

Our proposals would remove officers from schools, end over-policing in public housing, and establish a CAHOOTS-like model to address calls related to vulnerable people and people in crisis.
We propose to return police to their core function – with greater transparency, oversight, and accountability. But it’s time they let those best trained to address social service needs take the lead.

We’ve done the work and it’s clear to us that there’s a better way to invest municipal resources to address the symptoms and root causes of inequities in Brookline. We hope you agree.

The Select Board will be hosting a public hearing on our report as well as that of the Committee on Policing Reforms this Tuesday, March 16 at 7:00pm. Details: https://www.brooklinema.gov/Calendar.aspx?EID=9787...
We hope you'll show up, speak up, and endorse our report. Your voice matters, and the Select Board needs to hear it. Thanks.
