Our Story
The Emerald Association is primarily a social organization that promotes and supports Irish cultural events. Membership is open to all who share our interests and is not discriminatory on any basis. Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month, September through June at Trinity Lutheran Church 2103 Route 6 Brewster, NY. Doors open at 7:15pm and the meeting starts promptly at 8pm.
Membership enrollment has been as high as 200 families over the past 45 years. The Emerald Association is responsible for endowing six $600 college scholarships to high school seniors who are a child or grandchild of a current Emerald and meet the requirements outlined in the Scholarship Application. They also provide assistance to the local community through various means, entertaining at hospitals and nursing homes, in politics and serve(d) as school board members. Margaret O’Reilly, Treasurer and in-house Social Director, arranges for bus trips, cruises and flights for members, friends and the community at large. Many Emeralds are also members of the WestPut Setanta and they are always looking for new gaelic football players. We enjoy bowling night, our family picnic in August, our Christmas party, and our annual St. Patrick’s Day dance where we honor our “Emerald of the Year.”
The Emerald Association continues to contribute and perpetuate Irish history and culture throughout the region. Their annual Feis is held the third Sunday of May and allows dancers to compete in beginner, novice, prizewinner and championship categories. The dancers are the future “Michael Flatley’s” of the world and some have entertained in Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.
