is recognized on September 28 to help raise awareness about rabies prevention. According to the CDC, every year, rabies kills 70,000 people worldwide.
All mammals, including humans, can contract rabies. Once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease is fatal.
Thankfully, rabies is easily preventable through vaccination!
🤔 Did you know?
- Colorado legally requires that pets be vaccinated against rabies. If you’ve adopted from HSBV, we ensure all dogs, cats, and ferrets that are of-age are vaccinated. However, vaccinations must be repeated throughout an animal’s life. Talk to your veterinarian about when your pet’s next vaccine is due.
- While humans can be treated with post-exposure injections after a bite, pets cannot!
- Pets that are exposed to a rabies reservoir species (such as a bat, raccoon, skunk, fox, or coyote) will need another vaccine immediately and may, depending on their medical history, be placed under a mandatory quarantine.
This is why it is crucial to keep rabies vaccinations current (and yes - even for indoor-only pets) 🧡
