Erika didn’t know she had a bleeding disorder until adulthood. After years of unexplained symptoms and unanswered questions, she finally received a diagnosis and the care she needed. Today, thanks to regular iron infusions and a dedicated care team, Erika is a proud mom of three.

Different donors. Different backgrounds. One shared purpose: helping patients get the blood they need. ❤️

Sue and Mike are two of the many donors helping strengthen a diverse blood supply. And that diversity matters.

Blood types and other blood characteristics are inherited. When people from a wide range of backgrounds donate blood, it helps build a supply that better reflects the diverse patients who rely on transfusions.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, we’re celebrating Sue and Mike and the many donors who show up for patients in their communities.

Joy's first platelet donation came with a great story— a giant lemon she proudly grew and showed us on her phone!

While we loved hearing about her gardening success, what made the day truly special was her decision to become a first-time platelet donor.

Platelets are a vital part of blood that help control bleeding. They're used every day by cancer patients, trauma patients, transplant recipients, and others facing serious medical conditions. Because platelets have a shelf life of just five days, there's a constant need for people willing to donate.

Every experienced platelet donor started with a first donation. Joy took that first step, helping ensure patients have the lifesaving platelets they need when every moment matters.

Thank you, Joy, for growing something amazing—and for helping save lives.

When Mrs. Patsy’s mother needed a blood transfusion, it changed how she saw blood drives. ❤️

“I went to the hospital, and thankfully the blood was there. Once it hits home, it makes a difference.”

That experience strengthened Patsy’s commitment to coordinating blood drives and bringing coworkers, neighbors and community members together to donate blood.

Because before someone can donate blood, there has to be an opportunity to give.

Blood drive coordinators help make those opportunities happen. They organize blood donation events, rally their networks and create opportunities for people to give blood to patients facing emergencies, cancer treatments, surgeries and other medical needs.

You don’t have to donate blood to make a difference. You can help make blood donation possible.

For years, Paula wanted to donate blood but couldn’t. She never gave up. ❤️

After serving as an Army medic in Germany from 1986 to 1989, Paula was previously unable to donate because of eligibility restrictions related to time spent in certain European countries during the mad cow disease precautions.

Earlier this year, she learned those restrictions had changed. Her response? Schedule a blood donation appointment.

“As a nurse, I know there are a lot of people who need it.”

Her advice for anyone wondering what donating blood is really like? “The anticipation is always worse than the actual procedure.”

This World Never Give Up Day, Paula’s story is a reminder that eligibility can change, and it’s worth checking again. If you were previously deferred from blood donation because you lived in or traveled to Europe, you may now be eligible to donate.

Check your current blood donation eligibility and find an appointment at https://brnw.ch/21x51w5.

Thank you, Paula, for never giving up on your desire to help patients. We’re grateful to have you back in the donor chair. ❤️

His wife needed more than 180 units of blood products. He decided to give back. ❤️🩸

When Susan was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, John saw firsthand what blood donors can mean to a patient and their family.

Over the next two years, Susan received more than 130 platelet units and 50+ red blood cell units before undergoing a successful bone marrow transplant.

John had started donating in 2020, but witnessing Susan’s journey gave his donations an even deeper meaning. He kept coming back, reaching an incredible milestone this year: his 100th blood donation.

Now, John is a Vital Elite donor, part of a community recognizing donors who make giving blood a regular commitment.

“I appreciate the staff. They always make me feel right at home during the donation process.”

John, your 100 donations represent 100 moments when you chose to give. Congratulations on this incredible milestone, and thank you for continuing to show up for patients and families. ❤️

Your next self-care break could help a patient, too. 🩸😌

For National Relaxation Day, we’re taking a cue from George, who has made 618 platelet donations.

Today’s platelet donation experience is a lot more comfortable than when George started. With a lap tray and everything he needs within reach, he can settle in, relax and enjoy some downtime while donating platelets patients rely on.

So if your idea of relaxation includes a comfy chair, a favorite show, a good book or a little time to yourself, platelet donation might be worth adding to your self-care routine.

💬 What’s your favorite way to relax?

At 2 years old, Ariel needed heart surgery. Blood donors helped give her the chance to grow up and thrive. ❤️

Born six weeks premature alongside her twin sister, Katalina, Ariel was diagnosed with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect. About half of children born with Down syndrome have a congenital heart defect, and some require heart surgery and blood transfusions.

Today, Ariel is 8 years old, healthy and using her story to advocate for others in her community.

Her mom, Kristal, knows firsthand why having blood available matters:

“About 50 percent of people born with Down syndrome will need heart surgery, and many of those surgeries require blood. We need blood on the shelves for them and for everyone, so please keep donating. You're quite literally saving lives.”

Ariel’s story is a powerful reminder that blood transfusions are part of care for patients facing complex heart conditions, including children born with congenital heart defects.

If you’ve ever wondered who your blood donation helps, it could be someone like Ariel. 🩸

Your blood type is only part of what makes your blood unique. 🩸

For Javier, donating blood is a simple way to give back. But every donation also plays a role in building a diverse blood supply that can help patients receive well-matched blood when they need a transfusion.

Why does diversity in blood donation matter? Blood types and other blood characteristics are inherited. When people from a wide range of backgrounds donate, it helps create a blood supply that better reflects the diverse patients who rely on blood transfusions.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, Javier is reminding us that every community has a role to play.

❤️ Have you ever donated blood? Tell us what inspired you to give.
