The UUA has signed on to a letter calling for the termination of all deportation proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi, a lawful permanent US resident, Columbia University student, and Palestinian human rights activist.

Mohsen’s spiritual practices of Unitarian Universalism and Buddhism inform and are informed by his championing of human rights through active organizing, peace building, and policy reform.

The deportation proceedings against Mohsen aim to punish him for speaking out against the genocide in Palestine. His case is a clear example of the United States government violating the principles of free speech that are enshrined in the American democratic tradition and the Constitution.

As Unitarian Universalists, our foundational commitments rest upon values of pluralism, justice, inquiry and debate, and democratic freedom of expression for all people.

We lift up the call for the end of legal and political proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi and stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle for peace, justice, and freedom.

In a world that too often rewards polish and perfection, Craig Rowland reminds us of the power of honesty, openness, and simply showing up as we are.

Authenticity can be an invitation. When we share something real about ourselves, we make a little more room for others to do the same. And sometimes community begins in those small moments: reaching out, speaking truthfully, or extending an invitation before the words are perfect.

As Craig reminds us: “Truth is magnetic.”

A powerful work of art can help us remember what must not be forgotten—and ask what repair requires of us now.

At King’s Chapel in Boston, “Unbound,” a 14-foot bronze and granite sculpture by artist Harmonia Rosales, honors the 219 people enslaved by past members and ministers of the congregation. The memorial is part of King’s Chapel’s broader effort to confront its history, including ongoing work centered on reparative justice and reconciliation.

This week’s UU Acronym of the Week is:

𝘾𝙎𝘼𝙄 - 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙄𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚.

A CSAI is a social justice issue selected by UU congregations for three years of study, reflection, and action. It gives congregations a shared focus for learning, organizing, and putting UU values into practice.

The process can ultimately lead to a Statement of Conscience, which expresses a shared position of the Association.

The current 2024–2027 CSAI is Abolition, Transformation, and Faith Formation.

Federal court records have revealed that the First Universalist Church of Minneapolis was among Minnesota churches and community organizations secretly surveilled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Unitarian Universalist Association condemns this intrusion into a house of worship and the targeting of people exercising their constitutional rights to organize, dissent, and act according to their faith.

First Universalist has been clear that this surveillance will not deter its ministry or its commitment to its neighbors. As Rev. Jen Crow told UU World, “We are not surprised and we are not daunted because we are clear about who we are and what we do.”

Our faith calls us to courageous, prophetic work—and to act together against intimidation, government overreach, and attacks on the right to organize peacefully.

For some students, teachers, families, and school communities, the new school year is already underway. For others, those first days are just around the corner.

As another school year begins, we’re thinking especially of the students, educators, staff, caregivers, and families stepping into new classrooms, campuses, routines, relationships, and expectations.

May our schools be places where every person is welcomed in the fullness of who they are—places where students and educators are safe, where curiosity is nurtured, differences are honored, and everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong.

In the words of Rev. Debra Haffner’s blessing, "A New Year for Beloved Community":

“We gather together at the start of this new year
With gratitude and love
For those who have come before us
For those who stand here with us
May it be a good year. May it be a sweet year.”

The Woodlands returns September 6! 🌳

This monthly online spiritual community is beginning a new season of connection, care, joy, and rest for trans, non-binary, Two-Spirit, gender-expansive, intersex, gender-blessed, and gender non-conforming people—and those who love them.

And this year, The Woodlands is growing. We’re excited to introduce Sweetgums, a new dedicated space for the partners and spouses of trans people, alongside small community groups for trans youth and adults, parents, caregivers, and families.

Rooted in Unitarian Universalist values, The Woodlands offers a space where trans lives are not up for debate or explanation, but are honored as sacred, whole, and worthy of care.

Monthly gatherings resume September 6 at 5 p.m. Eastern / 2 p.m. Pacific.
