Meet the 2025 International Food
Sovereignty Prize winner: Association Nourrir
Sans Détruire (ANSD) from Burkina Faso.
The Food Sovereignty Prize stands as an alternative to the World Food Prize which has long been co-opted by global agribusiness interests and promotes productionist, often harmful “solutions” to global food crises. For more than ten years, ANSD has walked alongside the farmers, women, and young people from 126 villages who are growing food in ways that care for the soil, the water, and their communities.

Today, May 15, we recognize the 78th anniversary of the Nakba—which literally means “catastrophe.” It refers to the forced displacement of Palestinians that began with the establishment of the state of Israel.

In 1948, Zionist paramilitaries and Israeli forces expelled some 800,000 Palestinians (over 75 percent of the existing population) from their homes under threat of bombings, mass executions, and other forms of violence.

As the world has witnessed over the past 3 years in Palestine, Lebanon and beyond, the Nakba is an ongoing process. We will continue to work alongside millions around the world to achieve justice, human rights, and an end to militarism.

We’re in a profoundly challenging period full of tough questions. How can we respond to the moment? Where can we turn for political insights, moral clarity, and hope?

Our brand new annual report shows what social movements and their allies are making possible amid dire times.

It’s not just an important injection of hope. It’s an invitation to continue walking alongside these movements to make a better world.

We spotlight the Food Sovereignty Prize as a counterweight to the green revolution farming techniques valorized by the World Food Prize. In the face of corporate agricultures devastation of communities and ecosystems, the Food Sovereignty Prize shines the light on communities building a safe and just food system.

The US government played a major role in the Guatemalan armed conflict from 1960 to 1996, which contributed to high levels of gender-based violence and disproportionate impact for Maya people.

Buena Semilla is a grassroots collective based in Guatemala that supports marginalized Indigenous and non-Indigenous women and their communities in their quest to reclaim their voice, wellbeing, self-authority and self-determination.

Join us to learn more about the healing and wellbeing work that Grassroots International accompanies and how you can engage via the Martín-Baró Giving Circle for Healing and Wellbeing at our Open House this Friday, April 24. This Giving Circle includes an opportunity to visit our partners in Guatemala this November. https://go.grassrootsonline.org/a/martin-baro-open-house-2026

This we remember the importance of clean air, water, and land. Data center expansion and the AI race is putting our children’s livelihoods on the line. Data centers will drain our clean water supplies, increase our energy bills, and pollute our air, putting our health in jeopardy. Learn more on the data centers page of the Climate Justice Alliance’s website. Our community’s heartbeat is more important than a data center’s hum.

“Recovering historical memory is not about returning to the past, but about opening pathways of hope for the future.”

Ignacio Martín-Baró, a social psychologist and Jesuit priest committed to human rights, collective healing, and liberation, shared this insight.

Ignacio Martín-Baró was one among eight assassinated by the US-trained and funded Atlacatl Battalion on the campus of the Jesuit University of Central America-José Simeón Cañas (UCA) in San Salvador, El Salvador on November 16, 1989.

His work lives on through the Martín-Baró Fund for Mental Health and Human Rights, which was started shortly after his assassination to honor his legacy. In 2019, the Martín-Baró Fund transitioned into the Martín-Baró Initiative for Wellbeing and Human Rights, when it joined with Grassroots International.

Join us to learn more about this work and how you can engage in its current iteration as the Martín-Baró Giving Circle for Healing and Wellbeing at our Open House this Friday, April 24: https://go.grassrootsonline.org/a/martin-baro-open-house-2026
