Ada, who has led a team at The Walk for Hunger, recently visited the Summer Eats site at Orchard Gardens in Roxbury. Any child or teen 18 years old or under can receive FREE meals this summer—no ID or registration required.

SNAP is undergoing major changes. Since last July, when the Big Beautiful Bill passed, participation has declined. Stricter eligibility requirements are lowering enrollment, and the upcoming restructuring of SNAP’s funding, beginning in October, will shift administrative costs to states. If states scale back, food banks will be unable to meet the increased demand.

We must advocate for a robust SNAP program to ensure people can put food on the table.

SNAP, also known as food stamps, has seen a rapid and consistent participation decline since last July. The drop comes as the program faces historic cuts and changes.

Samuel Adams Elementary in East Boston launched Mr. Mike’s Food Pantry, inspired by their beloved cafeteria manager. Mr. Mike turned a kitchen supply closet into a pantry for students and families. The school's Walk for Hunger team, the Sea Dragons, joined The Commonwealth co-fundraising program and raised over $1,500 to open the pantry.

No student should have to worry about whether they can access a school meal. Thank you Rep. Ilhan Omar and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders for reintroducing the Universal School Meals Program Act. Universal school meals would help students thrive, support families, and strengthen schools nationwide.
