🌟 We honored Jean McMurray with the Patrick Hughes Award for Social Justice during our 58th Walk for Hunger on May 3! With 30 years of leadership at the Worcester County Food Bank, Jean has been a steadfast advocate in the fight against hunger in Massachusetts.

“I am so humbled because Project Bread means so much to me, personally and professionally,” she said. “This award recognizes 30 years of partnership in pursuit of our shared mission to end hunger. Project Bread has always focused on real, systemic solutions aimed at preventing hunger in the first place."

Jean has also served on Project Bread’s Board of Directors since January 2007, becoming Board Emeritus in 2023. She was instrumental in launching the Make Hunger History Coalition, a collective working to permanently end hunger in the state. We're thankful for Jean and her contributions.

People facing food insecurity cannot reach the help they need — there are not enough DTA caseworkers to handle the call volume. Project Bread is advocating for investment in the DTA, as it is critical to connecting families facing food insecurity with SNAP and handling increasing caseloads.

As hunger rises, the inability to reach state SNAP caseworkers contributes to thousands losing food assistance

The Senate FY27 budget proposal released today includes key investments to support the 40% of Massachusetts households facing food insecurity, such as full funding for the Healthy Incentives Program.

We are grateful for Senate leadership in proposing funding for DTA SNAP caseworkers at the same level as Governor Healey’s proposal. $148 million will maintain staffing at current levels. This is critical, but unfortunately, the latest data shows 4 out of 5 calls to DTA are going unanswered. DTA needs more staffing to meet the current challenge.

We are committed to working with the Senate as the budget process moves forward to strengthen this important investment and ensure MA residents get the support they need.

No Farm Bill is better than a bad Farm Bill. But last week, the US House of Representatives passed a bad Farm Bill that does nothing to help MA residents access healthy food. Worse, the bill fails to reverse the harmful SNAP cuts passed by Congress last summer.

We are grateful that all nine members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation stood up for our friends, family, and neighbors by voting no. Join us in urging our US Senators to oppose any Farm Bill without improvements to SNAP and other federal nutrition programs. Take action: https://projectbread.quorum.us/campaign/160551/

Thanks to our incredible community, we’ve hit our $1M goal for The Walk for Hunger. More than 4,000 of you walked this past weekend. Your generosity and dedication made this achievement possible.

We’re celebrating, but not stopping. Across Massachusetts, need is at crisis levels—new data shows 40% of our neighbors struggle to put food on the table. That’s why we’re aiming for a stretch goal of $1.25M to harness our momentum from The Walk and meet this urgent need.

Your support connects families to food when there’s nothing left at home, makes sure kids have enough to eat year-round, and guides everyday people through moments of crisis. At the same time, you’re advancing long-term solutions to end hunger for good.

Every dollar raised through The Walk fuels the fight to end hunger. Share your Walk for Hunger fundraising page or make a donation at https://give.projectbread.org/event/the-walk-for-hunger-2026/e685078 Thanks for your advocacy!

👟 Thanks to everyone who showed up for our 58th Walk for Hunger this morning! Thousands of you showed what community and advocacy are all about. Whether it’s your first walk or your 20th, your dedication to ending hunger in Massachusetts is inspiring.

We’re not done yet. Hunger has reached crisis levels, with 40% of households in this state facing food insecurity. The need is great, and so is our ability to meet it when we join together. Keep giving, keep fundraising, and keep moving the needle on hunger.
