The JSNA held its second monthly meeting in September!

Residents gathered to share concerns, exchange ideas, and continue working toward meaningful progress for the Jackson Square community.

JSNA members had the opportunity to hear from new homeowners seeking zoning relief to renovate their attic and add dormers to expand their living space. The homeowners presented their plans and explained existing conditions, outlining the variances they are requesting.

This discussion was one of many housing and safety related conversations of the evening.

We were honored to welcome Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley to JPNDC’s Nate Smith House for a roundtable discussion in recognition of Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month, organized by Magalys Troncoso of the Dominican Development Center and residents.

The conversation brought together community members and local leaders to share their perspectives and recommend action items for Rep. Pressley to bring back to Washington, D.C.

The Nate Smith House has a long history rooted in resident advocacy and community action. In 1992, the building’s original owner was placed under house arrest by a housing court judge at the urging of neighborhood residents and tenants. After the owner declared bankruptcy in 1993, JPNDC purchased the building and began the process of transforming the deteriorating tenement into quality, affordable housing for older adults.

Five years later, Jamaica Plain residents gathered at the newly opened Nate Smith House to celebrate its transformation into 45 units of affordable housing for seniors. Today, the Nate Smith House continues to serve as a place where residents, community members, and local leaders come together to share their experiences, advocate for their communities, and work toward positive change.

JPNDC enjoyed being in fellowship with community development leaders from across Massachusetts at the 2026 Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations (MACDC) Community Development Summit.

This year we celebrated two incredible recognitions. JPNDC received the Outstanding Partnership Award for the work of our Community Organizing and Economic Prosperity Services teams alongside our partner Boston Children’s Hospital. This acknowledges the impact of our collaborative work to strengthen resident leadership, safety, and economic opportunity in our communities. Special shout out to Paola Liendo, Associate VP of Economic Prosperity Services and Halley Jeremie, Associate Director of RAMWP for their work on this project. We’re proud to celebrate Paola Liendo, Associate Vice President of Economic Prosperity Services; Halley Jeremie, Associate Director of the Resident Advocacy, Mobility, and Wellness Pathways Program (RAMWP); and Jailynn Caraballo, Associate Director of Communications, for representing JPNDC at this year’s Annual National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) Conference.

The NALCAB Conference brings together leaders, practitioners, and organizations from across the country to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen the work of building thriving and equitable communities.

As a proud NALCAB member, JPNDC values the opportunity to connect with organizations nationwide that are working to expand opportunities and support historically underrepresented communities.

This year’s NALCAB conference centered on the theme “Juntos en la Lucha: Activating Our Power.” This is a timely reminder for all of us that we do, in fact, have power we can collectively harness to create the change we want to see.

Community is what makes Jackson Square strong.

Following the Third Annual Peace Walk, neighbors, youth, and community leaders gathered for a community cookout filled with good food, conversation, connection, and celebration.

The afternoon was a chance to come together, build relationships, celebrate our neighbors, and reflect on the importance of community in creating safer, healthier, and more connected neighborhoods.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring the day to life and to everyone who continues to show up for Jackson Square. Together, we’re building community, creating connections, and keeping the spirit of neighborhood power alive.
