Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day – a recognition of the Native American community and a reminder that the neighborhood we now call the Fenway are the traditional homelands of the Massachusett Tribe.
Fenway Forward's Director of Community Programs, Sage Carbone (Northern Narragansett, Mi'kmaq), has designed the jerseys for the Red Sox Native American and American Indian Celebration for three years in a row. This year's jersey represents strength, prosperity, and sovereignty through traditional and modern elements. It includes the four direction colors of a medicine wheel - yellow, red, black, and white - stylistically in a ribbon skirt or shirt motif. Tribes and tribal nations interpret this symbol differently, sometimes assigning characteristics or directions to the individual colors. The collar replicates a wampum necklace, traditionally crafted from the quahog shell and used as a form of trade currency. The back nameplate reads "STILL HERE" recognizing the continuous presence of Native Americans and American Indians across Turtle Island.
We honor all Indigenous people of Turtle Island and their ancestors, while recognizing that acknowledgement does not undo the harm that has been done and continues to this day against Indigenous people, the land, and the water.
