For our October Clubs and council’s meeting, we will be joined by Jenna Malzahn, a Black Bear Biologist with the NCWRC’s Game Mammals and Survey’s Team. Jenna will be telling us all about the current status of Black Bears in North Carolina, and how the tooth samples provided by hunters can help biologists learn more about these incredible predators.

This seminar will be held over teams, but if you attend our pint night at Crooked Hammock Brewery you’ll be able to join fellow NC BHA members for a live-stream of the event!

Did you know?
North Carolina was among several states across the Southeast within the native range of the lake sturgeon. Habitat degradation, pollution, dams and over harvest extirpated the species generations ago, but there is a movement to bring them back. Starting in 2015, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and partners initiated a stocking program aimed at bringing lake sturgeon back to the French Broad River. That campaign continues, with more than 1,500 fingerling sturgeons being released this morning into the river in Madison County. NC BHA supports science-based wildlife management and restoring the landscape with its native flora and fauna. With a lifespan that can extend beyond 100 years, we join many others in wishing these little dinosaurs well.

All hands on deck!
The N.C. Wildlife freshwater fisheries team needs volunteers Aug. 25 to plant 1,000 water willow seedlings along a section of the North Fork Mills River, in an effort to restore shoreline vegetation and improve aquatic habitat for fish and other critters. We’ll meet at 8 a.m. in the parking area adjacent to North Mills River Campground (35.4062704,-82.6430738). Let’s show ‘em NC BHA is always ready to help great projects succeed.
