The opioid crisis has affected families and communities across America. Awareness provides an opportunity to reduce stigma, strengthen prevention, remember lives lost, and connect people with treatment and recovery support.

National Opioid Awareness Day emphasizes education and overdose-prevention strategies while reinforcing that recovery is possible.

Community Action Agencies can be important partners by helping individuals and families connect with behavioral-health providers, stable housing, employment services, transportation, and other resources that support recovery.

September is an excellent time to encourage families to add more fruits and vegetables to everyday meals while continuing the broader conversation about food access, nutrition education, and healthy communities. September is recognized among public-health organizations for observances focused on fruit and vegetable consumption.

🩵 September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Awareness empowers women and families to have informed conversations about ovarian and gynecologic health.

This month is an opportunity to learn about risk factors, family history, genetic testing when appropriate, prevention strategies, and changes in your health that should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance is emphasizing risk awareness, genetic information, prevention, and community education throughout September.

Building Healthier Communities Across Alabama

Alabama’s 2026 legislative session brought several important developments affecting healthcare and public assistance, with a focus on strengthening rural healthcare, improving nutrition, and expanding access to preventive cancer screenings.

Strengthening Rural Healthcare
The Alabama Rural Health Antitrust Immunity Act provides limited protections that can help rural healthcare providers collaborate, share resources, coordinate staffing, and make better use of facilities—important steps toward improving access to care in underserved communities.

Supporting Healthier Food Choices
Alabama also approved legislation directing the state to seek federal authorization to restrict SNAP purchases of certain high-sugar candies and sodas. The effort is intended to encourage healthier nutrition and address conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

Expanding Access to Cancer Screening
New measures will also reduce out-of-pocket costs for certain breast and prostate cancer screenings, helping more Alabamians access preventive services and potentially detect cancer earlier.
