The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham is igniting passion for transformational change

Our Community's Foundation was founded in 1959 by people who believed that Birmingham needed a public endowment to meet its greatest needs and seize opportunities to make life better -- forever. We're still doing that and providing even more ways for you to join us as we bring people together to achieve measurable results and leverage gifts and bequests to create positive change.

In 2023, Kyle and Veronica McGee launched Kyle’s Cool Beans, a pop-up coffee cart that has grown into so much more.

In spring 2026, Kyle’s Cool Beans, a nonprofit organization, received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. These funds will help upgrade equipment and support operating expenses and social media management.

In addition to running the coffee cart, Kyle’s Cool Beans also has an online store to sell its special blend and merchandise. Kyle’s Cool Beans coffee is USDA Certified Organic, fair trade, carbon neutral, and plastic free. He also sells cool merchandise.

But serving coffee and cold brew at One Nineteen every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and selling coffee beans online only scratch the surface of what Kyle’s Cool Beans is all about: inclusive employment for people with disabilities.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease refers to a group of inherited blood disorders that affect an estimated 100,000 Americans and disproportionately impacts Black and Hispanic communities. The observance highlights the need for expanded access to specialized care, research, and support services for patients and their families.

Last year, Ann Oldham and her husband, Myron Thompson, along with their children Jason and Jaylan, established the Lilly and Miles Oldham Thompson Fund, a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, in memory of their children, Lilly and Miles. Lilly lived with sickle cell disease for all 10 years of her life; her twin brother, Miles, passed away in May 2024 at age 39 from causes unrelated to the disease.

“This particular fund has my son's name on it because he really supported and loved his sister,” Oldham said. “He was very much a part of everything we did for her.” The fund supports UAB's sickle cell clinic for children in and around Montgomery, along with other specialized programs and services for young patients and their families.

The goal of the fund is to help Montgomery's pediatric sickle cell clinic — which currently must set up and break down its space at Baptist Medical Center after each service day — move into a permanent home of its own. “We want to make the clinic a place where children feel welcomed,” Oldham said.

Raj and Nital Patel, a married couple who live near Homewood, care deeply about making a positive impact on our area.

In 2025, the Patels found the perfect vehicle to help the community, setting up a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) here at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

A DAF allows donors to draw on the expertise and local knowledge of foundation staff while targeting their contributions to specific causes they care about. The Foundation works with the donor to honor their intent and philanthropic interest.

The DAF “allows us flexibility on grants to recommend over time, all the while allowing growth in the invested funds,” Raj says.

Our most recent grant to allowed them to host "Helping Our Community Stay on the Move." Hearts of Wheels provided complimentary automotive repair and education to 30 Birmingham residents. Access to transportation is a critical ingredient to ensuring our communities thrive. We love to see this!

In 2024, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham launched its impact investing initiative, making investments that drive positive change in the counties we serve, and provide a return on investment – of both financial and social impact.

Impact investments are investments made into local companies, organizations, and funds with the intention of generating measurable community benefit alongside financial returns.

Impact investing offers mission-minded investors a way to accelerate projects by providing funding, usually through low-interest loans, to nonprofits. Nonprofits leverage these investments to achieve results in areas such as safe and healthy housing, educational opportunities, equitable access to career training, and more.
