We received information from sources at Ridglan Farms that it will cease operations after it releases 475 more dogs for placement in homes!

On June 2, 2026, Ridglan’s counsel reached out to the Center’s attorney and proposed a sale of the remaining 475 dogs – 325 now and 150 later this summer, after a testing protocol concludes with that latter group of dogs. It appears that the company shopped for a higher price for the dogs from BDRR and obtained it.

Today, the Center for a Humane Economy can share something we once only hoped was possible:
Ridglan Farms is shutting down.

The facility that for decades bred beagles for laboratory testing is winding down operations, and every remaining dog is expected to be transferred to animal welfare organizations for care, rehabilitation, and adoption.

This outcome did not happen overnight. It came from years of advocacy, investigations, legal pressure, public engagement, rescue partnerships, and determined negotiations focused on one goal: getting the dogs out.

Soon, more than 2,000 beagles who were born into the laboratory supply system will have been given the chance to live as family companions instead of research commodities.

This is a milestone worth celebrating—not only for the dogs leaving Ridglan, but for the growing movement to replace outdated animal testing with modern, human-relevant science.

A facility is closing. The dogs are going free. And the future is moving in the right direction.

A major development for horses and animal welfare.

The USDA has suspended exports of horses to Mexico following concerns about the spread of "New World screwworm," a devastating flesh-eating parasite that threatens livestock, wildlife, pets, and even people.

Animal welfare advocates say the suspension highlights a larger reality: the horse slaughter pipeline creates unnecessary disease risks while serving a shrinking foreign horse meat market.

With roughly 25,000 American horses exported for slaughter each year, momentum is growing in Congress to permanently end the trade once and for all.

We're just getting started! Pass the FDA Modernization Act 3.0!

Today, we brought another 68 precious beings from Ridglan Farms to Dane County Humane Society. For each of these dogs a new life begins today. Some are scared. Some are shy. Some are the most cuddly being imaginable. Some upon touching grass for the first time in their lives had the most adorable cases of the zoomies ever seen.

We are beyond grateful to our teammates from Dane County Humane Society, Beagle Freedom Project, Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, and the Wisconsin Federated Humane Societies. We are also grateful for the incredible network of shelters and rescues in Wisconsin and surrounding states that are giving these beagles a chance at that new life.

For every new beginning there has to be an ending, and we are working to make the end of animal testing a reality. You can help by contacting your senators and representative in Congress and asking them to support the FDA Modernization Act 3.0.

More information about the FDA Modernization Act in the comments.

The next set of Ridglan beagles have been released! We’re working now to ensure each one is healthy and ready for their next phase of life!

But the efforts in Wisconsin only emphasize our need for the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 to end the era of animal testing for drug development!
