Few physician-scientists have shaped blood safety and cellular therapy quite like Edgar Engleman, MD.
During the early years of the AIDS epidemic, Engleman helped pioneer blood screening approaches designed to identify individuals at risk before symptoms appeared and advocated for blood safety measures years before mandatory HIV testing was implemented.
Later, his work at Stanford Blood Center helped establish foundational methods for cellular immunotherapy, contributing to the scientific pathway that ultimately led to the first FDA-approved cellular therapy and helping usher in a new era of cancer treatment.
AABB is proud to honor Dr. Engleman with the 2026 Landsteiner-Alter Award. Here’s how he helped shape two defining chapters in the history of our field: https://bit.ly/4dP7yR8
