🐮 LIVESTOCK 101: What Is a Livestock Project?
A 4-H livestock project is more than bringing an animal to a show!
It’s a hands-on learning experience where youth raise and care for animals while learning about agriculture, animal science and responsibility.
Depending on their project, members learn to:
🐄 Feed and care for their animal.
🩺 Recognize signs of illness and maintain animal health.
📒 Keep records of expenses and growth.
🐐 Practice handling and working with their animal.
🏆 Prepare for livestock exhibitions.
And while showing animals is an exciting opportunity, much of the learning happens long before show day!
Livestock projects teach responsibility, patience, time management, problem-solving and confidence.

🍀🐄 LIVESTOCK 101: MORE THAN THE SHOW RING!
Have you ever watched a 4-H livestock show and wondered how those students got started?
Maybe your child is interested in raising an animal, but you’re not sure where to begin. That’s exactly why we’re starting Livestock 101!
Over the next several weeks, we’ll introduce the different livestock projects available through EBR 4-H and answer questions like:
🐷 What animals can youth raise?
🏡 Do you have to live on a farm?
💰 How much does it cost?
📋 What are possession and validation?
🏆 What happens at a livestock show?
We’ll also share important deadlines and explain what families need to know before getting started.
Whether you’re new to livestock or already have an animal in the barn, follow along!
🍀 More Than the Show Ring!
💬 Have a livestock question? Leave it in the comments!
