Midcoast Literacy is a non-profit organization based in Bath, Maine that provides free literacy programs to people of all ages in Lincoln, Sagadahoc and northern Cumberland Counties.

Midcoast Literacy is hiring! We are looking for a part-time Site Instructor for our Read With Me program in Lincoln County. The Site Instructor works during the school year visiting local Head Start Centers run by Midcoast Maine Community Action in Newcastle, Wiscasset, Whitefield, and Waldoboro. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to our Annual Meeting and Celebration last Sunday. Although the weather wasn’t in our favor, so many of our tutors, learners and supporters joined us for an afternoon of food and fun. Congratulations again to our wonderful award winners: Midcoast Maine Community Action (Community Partner of the Year), Barbara Sonia (The Newton Blakesley & Cyndy Lewis Outstanding Tutor Award), Eason Cui (Outstanding Read Together Learner) and Samantha Stella (Outstanding Adult Learner). We appreciate everything you all do for Midcoast Literacy and our community!

This month’s Success Story celebrates five years of our Workplace Literacy program at Wild Oats Bakery & Café in Brunswick. Wild Oats was our first workplace site, developed through the collaboration of two MCL tutors, Anne Childs and Julie Criscitiello. “Over the years, the Midcoast Literacy teachers have always been willing to rise to the challenge and work on whatever industry-specific topics we needed,” said Marshall Shepherd, Wild Oats Managing Partner. “The class gives them an opportunity to grow into other jobs,” said Anne. “It's an hour that is set aside for them.”

Gelato Fiasco is hosting Midcoast Literacy for a Scooping for Community Day next Tuesday, May 19th. Visit Gelato Fiasco at their Brunswick store on May 19th any time from 11am-11pm and they will donate 75% of all eligible sales to Midcoast Literacy! Don’t forget! Our Annual Meeting & Celebration is coming up on Saturday, May 30th, 4:00 – 6:00 pm. We invite all tutors, learners, supporters, community partners, and family members to join us as we highlight our 2025 successes and celebrate the accomplishments of all our tutors and learners together. We have a fantastic afternoon planned filled with food, lawn games, and awards to recognize some of our outstanding community members. Bring a lawn chair, bring a friend, and enjoy an afternoon in the sun with Midcoast Literacy. We can’t wait to see you all on May 30!

We had a fantastic Author-to-Author fundraiser last Saturday, May 2, with Monica Wood and Lewis Robinson. Thank you, Monica and Lewis, for sharing your work and giving us all an insight into your writing process, inspirations and friendship. Thank you also to tutor Cheryl and her learner Sabiqa who shared their story with us; Gary and Beth at Gulf of Maine Books who had the authors’ books for sale; our sponsors Northeast Bank, Wild Oats Bakery & Café, Morning Glory Natural Foods and Hannaford Supermarkets; and UUCB who hosted us for the fourth year. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended, bought raffle tickets and books, or simply donated to support Midcoast Literacy programs!
