Midcoast Literacy has had a busy summer preparing to train new tutors, putting on fundraisers and connecting with children across midcoast Maine at our growing number of Summer Books locations. During this busy time, our staff have also enjoyed filling their down time with a good book! Here’s what we’ve been reading this summer:

🕵 The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff
Historical fiction following a group of female secret agents during World War 2, based on the real-life Special Operations Executive missions carried out under Vera Atkins.

📮 The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
An epistolary debut novel that uncovers the life of Sybil Van Antwerp through letters she has written and received, and that highlights the solace of writing. Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction.

🚲 What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Contemporary fiction that asks: “Do you like who you’ve become?” 39-year-old Alice falls off a stationary bike at the gym and wakes up believing she is 29, having lost 10 years’ worth of memories.

📱 The Yahoo Boys by Carlos Barragán
Non-fiction that explores the personal motivations of four men in Lagos, Nigeria who, driven by poverty and few economic opportunities, scam lonely Westerners over the internet.

🌊 The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
A cozy, surreal novel that follows Linus Baker as he inspects an orphanage for magical children, advocating for found family, compassion over fear and breaking the rules for the greater good.

Dolly Parton, who passed away on Tuesday, was a fierce advocate for literacy and education, inspired by her dad who dropped out of school to work and was unable to read.

Dolly created The Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to support children’s educational success in her home county of Sevier, Tennessee. Her first endeavor, the Buddy Program, promised local children $500 if they graduated high school. In 1995, she founded the Imagination Library, gifting families with children under five free books every month. To date, the Imagination Library has distributed more than 300 million books across five countries.

Dolly’s generosity gave millions of children worldwide a love of reading, an ambition that is shared by Midcoast Literacy.

MCL Executive Director Daniel Burson and colleagues from the Brunswick Area Volunteerism Collaborative presented a session about their work together at Volunteer Maine's 40th Annual Volunteer Leadership Conference last week! It was a great opportunity to share what's working in our local area and to learn from and network with other volunteer leaders in Maine.

This month, we are congratulating our tutor-learner pair Pedro, a rising seventh-grader from Brunswick, and Linda Trapp. Matched in July 2024, Pedro and Linda have come so far and done so much these past two years. “I have watched Pedro improve in reading,” Linda says. “It’s fun to hear him read. Now he puts inflection in his voice as he reads the lines of characters in our books.” Pedro is appreciative of all Linda has done with him, too. “It feels nice to be here and learning. I learned a lot of things with Linda, and it’s really nice to also go outside and do activities,” like riding horses at the MCL Readers Ride event two years in a row.

We are delighted to welcome Natasha Domina, our new Summer Books Assistant, who will be joining our Summer Books Coordinator, Robin, this year at our growing number of sites.
