Kennebec Estuary Land Trust

Kennebec Estuary Land Trust Established in 1989, we are a membership supported, non-profit land trust dedicated to conserve, rest

The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) is committed to the conservation of the land, water, and wildlife of the Kennebec River estuary- where the Lower Kennebec River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Through mechanisms such as conservation easements, property donation, and outright purchase, KELT is committed to identifying and protecting land in our region with ecological, agricultural, scenic, cultural

or historic significance and providing access to the properties we own for non-motorized low impact recreation. KELT has worked with many great partners to permanently protect over 18,000 acres of land in the Kennebec Estuary; and KELT owns 1500+ acres of land which includes 10 public preserves and holds 24 conservation easements (1400+ acres)

In addition to our direct conservation work, we participate in fruitful collaborations with state and federal agencies, private conservation organizations, municipalities, and community members on data gathering, conservation, and restoration projects.

This spring, we’re partnering with to give you AND your kiddos an opportunity to get hands-on first aid skills!

The Four Seasons Junior First Aid is a seasonally-based First Aid program with Wild Maine Med designed to prepare kids to safely explore and enjoy Maine year-round. Rooted in the rhythms of the natural world, each session focuses on the unique risks and realities of the current season– whether it’s water safety, sun exposure, and dehydration in the summer, or cold injuries, ice safety, and emergency preparedness in the winter. Through hands-on scenarios, games, and interactive skill-building, participants not only learn how to recognize and respond to season-specific challenges, but also reinforce core first aid principles like patient assessment, decision-making, and emergency response. This dynamic program builds confidence, resilience and responsibility– helping kids develop the awareness and skills they need to anticipate risks, make smart choices, and take action when it matters most.

Thanks to for hosting and to everyone who joined us last month for the film screening of Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong!

We raised $600 - all of which goes to protecting and stewarding the landscape of the Kennebec Estuary, providing programs like these to our community, and helping to create connections through nature.

Governor Mills has proclaimed February 23rd though March 1st as Invasive Species Awareness Week. Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is launching daily educational updates to help you recognize, prevent, and report invasive threats affecting our forests, farms, and waterways.

Non-native species threaten the biodiversity of ecologically important areas. By controlling these invasive species, KELT can protect the unique ecological value of the land.

We are engaged in a variety of invasive species mitigation strategies including: biological control for purple loosestrife, emerald ash borer monitoring, biological control for hemlock woolly adelgid, jumping worm mitigation in LOCAL Garden, and other mechanical and chemical treatments.

Preserves Manager, Dillon Mulhern, co-led an invasive plant control workshop this past summer for stewardship staff across Maine. A major focus was stiltgrass, seen in these photos.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity has ramped up in our state. The anxiety, fear, and pain this is causing is real. Immigrant communities and communities of color are bearing the brunt of this, but each of us - alongside our neighbors, families, friends, and organizations - are impacted.

We are looking to our values and our focus on caring - for people and place - to lead the way.
