At Bath Housing, we’re always looking for ways to better support residents in our communities. A few years ago, we recognized that air conditioning is no longer a luxury for many older adults — it’s a necessity during the hottest parts of the summer.

Many of our buildings are older and require window A/C units, which residents are responsible for providing themselves. To help address that need, we started a free loaner A/C program.

We’re happy to share that this year, every resident who requested a loaner A/C received one. In total, we provided air conditioners to 38 residents at Anchorage, Dike’s Landing, Moorings, and Seacliff/Floral Street.

Thank you to the Bessie Brooks Foundation, which helped launch the program, and to the individuals who have continued to support this effort through donations over the years. And EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU to our maintenance team for installing these!

Bath Housing marks a decade of helping seniors age in place

Paul Bagnall
Staff Writer

A Bath Housing program focused on keeping seniors in their homes is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Christopher St. John, 80, has lived with his wife, Eunice, 88, in Brunswick for the past 13 years, Comfortably Home allowed Christopher to help take care of Eunice by connecting the couple with maintenance staff to improve their home to make staying there possible.

Seniors living in Sagadahoc County and Brunswick with median incomes below $74,480 and $110,800 — depending on household size and location — can qualify for Bath Housing’s one-time service Comfortably Home program. The aging-in-place program provides adults 55 and above with minor repairs and upgrades to keep them in their homes.

The average income for the Comfortably Home program’s participants is $25,000, with a single person living in Sagadahoc County under $74,480 can qualify for the program, said Jessica Irish, Bath Housing’s deputy director.

Bath Housing started the Comfortably Home program in October 2015 and has served 428 homeowners in the Midcoast, but the costs for the materials and labor of the modifications have gone up.

“We emphasize that this is a low-barrier program and very simple to access,” said Debora Keller, executive director of Bath Housing.

Some improvements Comfortably Home has made to the St. Johns house include the installation of carbon monoxide smoke detectors, updating the doorway thresholds to reduce their chances of tripping, putting in stairway railings and adding fixtures to the shower to allow them to sit down.

MaineHealth Community Health and Nursing Services in Brunswick referred the St. Johns to Comfortably Home after Eunice went to the hospital in February 2025. Eunice had tripped on the threshold three times after getting home from the hospital, risking another trip back, before Comfortably Home repaired the St. John’s threshold in their home.

After getting verified, Bath Housing’s maintenance team visits the applicant’s home to assess what needs will best help the homeowner, spending up to $3,500 on average per home. It covers the cost of materials needed for home modifications, repairs and staff time at no cost to the homeowner.

“We created this program based on clear indicators in our conversations in the community that people wanted to stay in their own homes as they got older,” Keller said.

This spring, we’re celebrating exciting momentum for aging in place across Maine. There is growing recognition that small home improvements can make a life-changing difference for older adults and people with disabilities.

A few recent highlights from Comfortably Home:
🏡 Maine approved $2 million in bipartisan funding for Community Aging in Place programs statewide.
🏡 Comfortably Home was featured in the Portland Press Herald for helping people stay safe, independent, and connected to their homes and communities.
🏡 The Maine Legislature officially recognized the 10th anniversary of Comfortably Home and its role as the model for MaineHousing’s statewide program.

Most importantly, we continue hearing stories like Lisa’s:
“I tell people I am grateful several times a day for this program… it makes all the difference about living there.” Here's a link to Lisa's video: youtube.com/watch?v=_FdM_2drRtg&feature=youtu.be

Comfortably Home provides free safety checks, accessibility modifications, and minor home repairs for eligible homeowners age 55+ or living with a disability in Sagadahoc County and Brunswick.
