Another school has entered the chat! The Southwest Baltimore Community reading center has launched tutoring for the school year.

Our AmeriCorps Reading Success Coaches, Asauntee Bynum and Renate Mitchell, have launched the program this year with 30 tutors and counting! It is wonderful to have so many tutors answer the call to support our students.

It is National Tutor Week, and we are thrilled to announce that tutoring has begun at Marie Reed Elementary School!

Our AmeriCorps Reading Success Coaches, Madeleine Kirkpatrick and Isabel Dines, have launched the reading center with 12 tutor pairings, and the number is only going up from here.

We look forward to welcoming new and returning tutors to our reading centers soon! 🧡🧡💙💙

From Nere Eyeguokan (RP Mid-Atlantic Program Manager): Teach For America is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and I’m proud to say I’m an alumna of the 2019 Baltimore corps, where I served as an elementary and middle school math teacher.

TFA was the springboard to my career in education. From the classroom to serving as a content specialist, coaching new teachers, leading teams, and now serving as a Program Manager at Reading Partners Mid-Atlantic, the beliefs, skills, and experiences I gained through my time at TFA have shaped me into the professional I am today.

I hope to continue doing this work to improve life outcomes for students and advance educational equity.

Mid-Atlantic (Baltimore) tutor Sharon Flagler donated ~500 books this week, which we could not be more grateful for her partnership!!

Our "Take Reading With You" book program is designed to help students continue their literacy journey at home so that they may become lovers of reading. For Sharon, her first year tutoring at Westport Elementary filled her with joy and a sense of purpose. As soon as Summer hit, she was out in the community, corrdinating effots to collects books for our students.

We are hopeful there will continue to be more volunteers who seek opportunities to deepen their partnership by donating books, supplies and funds to help support our program.

Winnie is a first-year AmeriCorps Volunteer serving as a Reading Success Coach at Statesmen Boys School. Fun facts about Winnie:

☕ She is a coffee drinker
🍫 Her favorite candy and/or snack food is any kind of chocolate or sweets
✨ What excites her most about her new role is the new environment and meeting the community

Also, Winnie learned about Reading Partners through her mother-in-law, who is a Reading Partners tutor. We are thrilled to have Winnie on our team this school year!
