Groundwork is our broader initiative helping young people thrive in an AI-shaped world. The Unwritten Challenge is its first U.S. funding opportunity, with grants of $50,000 to $100,000 for nonprofits helping youth learn deeply and think critically.

Young people need room to work through a hard question and discover what they think. As AI becomes part of everyday life, how do we protect those opportunities?

The Unwritten Challenge will invest at least $1 million in 10+ organizations helping young people ages 10 to 19 strengthen their learning and independent judgment. We’re looking for approaches that support young people wherever they learn, including at home and in after-school programs.

Grants range from $50,000 to $100,000. Selected leaders will also join the Young Futures Academy for five months of support, including leadership development and peer learning. Solutions do not need to use AI.

Use AI and feel guilty. Don’t use AI and feel like you’re falling behind.

For young people, the pressure around AI is showing up in very different ways.

In this clip from “The State of Digital Tension,” Abby Binder of Civics Unplugged shares what she heard from two young people on opposite sides of the country, both struggling with shame around their AI use for completely different reasons.

As conversations about AI focus on cheating, homework and productivity, Abby asks us to pay attention to something underneath all of it: how young people actually feel about the norms being built around them.

Growing up comes with enough questions. AI is adding a few more. 💭

That’s why we’re opening applications for the Unwritten Challenge, supporting U.S. nonprofits helping young people ages 10 to 19 learn deeply, think critically, and make healthy decisions in an AI-shaped world.

We’re investing at least $1 million across 10+ organizations, with grants of $50,000 to $100,000 and five months of learning and support through the Young Futures Academy.

Working on something that gives young people room to question, explore, and build their own judgment? Your solution may or may not use AI. We’d love to hear about it.

Young people are constantly being told that AI is going to change everything. But how often are they given a real say in what that future looks like?

In this clip from “The State of Digital Tension,” Maddie Freeman of NoSo Connection Collective talks about the lack of control many young people feel as AI is framed as inevitable, and why simply listening to youth is not enough.

Young people should be in positions of real stakeholdership, helping shape the technologies they are already using and will inherit.
