The Texas School for the Deaf Foundation (TSDF) supports students at the Texas School for the Deaf by funding programs and resources that help them learn, grow, and belong. In 2000, Texas School for the Deaf Foundation (TSDF) was founded by a small group of dedicated individuals who wanted to enrich the programming made available to the children and families served by the Texas School for the Deaf. The goal was to augment TSD’s already excellent curriculum by providing new educational opportunities and resources that would deepen the language skills and broaden the possibilities for the deaf population of Texas. ‘

Today, TSDF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a volunteer board of directors that sets the direction for the organization and monitors financial and operational performance. Our board is a cross-section of citizens who serve as TSDF’s ambassadors to other agencies, funders, prospective donors and the general community with the goal of supporting Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) and its statewide partners in education.

During Deaf Awareness Month, we asked members of the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation board to reflect on what access, belonging, and support can mean for Deaf students.

Christy Thompson, TSDF Administrative Assistant & Fundraising Coordinator, shares: “The thing that I hope that every Texas School for the Deaf student, preschool through high school, feels as they walk through the front doors each day is that they are truly loved and feel included.”

Her reflection is a simple reminder that belonging starts with feeling welcomed, valued, and part of the community from the moment you arrive.

During Deaf Awareness Month, we asked members of the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation board to reflect on what access, belonging, and support can mean for Deaf students.

TSDF Treasurer Evan Winegard shares: “Every Deaf child should be able to walk into school feeling they belong and knowing people believe in them. Full access to language and their environment gives them the confidence to put themselves out there and go after their passions.”

His reflection is a reminder that when students feel supported, believed in, and fully included, they have more freedom to explore what excites them and pursue their passions with confidence.

For Deaf Awareness Month, we asked members of the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation board to reflect on the experiences they hope every Deaf child can have at school.

TSDF Vice President Amanda Lee Tuite responded to the question:

“What do you wish every Deaf child could experience at school?”

“I know what it feels like to experience alienation in school or in life, and I also know how much those experiences can shape how a young person sees themselves. Every Deaf child deserves the opportunity to build friendships, open new doors to try new things, discover their strengths, make mistakes, lead, and grow without feeling limited by other people’s expectations of what they can or cannot do. Lets build more connections.”

Her reflection is a reminder that access is also about having the freedom to explore, connect, make mistakes, discover your strengths, and grow without being defined by someone else’s expectations.

Austin is home. Sometimes, it’s also the classroom.

Through TSDF grant support, Texas School for the Deaf students had opportunities to take part in hands-on service experiences across the city — from helping care for local parks and supporting food pantry efforts to volunteering alongside community organizations and nonprofits.

These experiences create space for students to build teamwork, responsibility, confidence, and connection while contributing to the community around them.

During Deaf Awareness Month, stories like this are a reminder that access can also mean having meaningful opportunities to participate, serve, learn, and grow beyond campus.

For Deaf Awareness Month, we asked members of the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation board to reflect on the experiences that shaped their understanding of access, belonging, and education.

TSDF President Tamara Suiter shares: “I grew up never questioning whether I belonged because I was surrounded by Deaf peers, accessible language, and adults who expected me to succeed. I wish that for every Deaf child.”

Her reflection is a reminder that belonging can begin with access to language, community, and people who believe in what students are capable of.

September is Deaf Awareness Month. 💛

At Texas School for the Deaf, access shows up in so many ways, through language, learning, friendships, shared experiences, and the freedom to fully participate.

When access is built into the environment from the beginning, students have more room to explore who they are, build confidence, discover their strengths, and imagine what is possible.

Throughout the month of September, we’ll be sharing reflections from members of the TSDF board alongside stories of what Foundation support helps make possible for TSD students.

Because access is more than being included in the room. It is having the opportunity to learn, grow, belong, and thrive.

Funding in Action: Sky Rangers Drone Team 🚁

With Texas School for the Deaf Foundation's grant support, TSD Middle School students had the opportunity to build skills, travel as a team, and compete as part of the Sky Rangers TSD Drone Team.

Through this experience, students practiced coding, problem-solving, teamwork, mechanical repair, and staying calm under pressure — all while discovering how science and math connect to real-world technology.

The impact went beyond the competition. Students gained confidence, pride, leadership, and a stronger sense of belonging in STEM spaces.

Funding in Action: Early Learning + Family Field Trips 🎒

Learning starts early and grows through real-world experiences.

Through Texas School for the Deaf Foundation's grant support, toddlers and families participated in monthly field trips that brought classroom learning to life. From animals and plants to seasons, textures, movement, and everyday conversation, each experience helped students build vocabulary, sign language skills, curiosity, and confidence.

Families were part of the learning, too — practicing language strategies they could continue using at home.

That’s what support makes possible: early learning, family connection, and meaningful experiences that help students learn, grow, and belong.
