One of the pleasures of Wednesday night’s Double Vision + Invoke concert at Monks Jazz was seeing guitarist and composer 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥 in the room.

Carl co-leads Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet with longtime Austin saxophonist and flutist 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐂𝐨𝐤𝐞.

Hank Hehmsoth and John Mills go back decades with Alex, and Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet has one of the more distinctive instrumental combinations in Austin creative music: concert harp, pedal steel, vibes, saxophone/flute, guitar, and bass.

It was great to reconnect after the Monks Jazz performance and keep the conversation going. H Project Performing Arts Association is always interested in the places where Texas jazz, composition, improvisation, and adventurous ensemble writing cross paths.

Last night at Monks Jazz, H Project Performing Arts Association successfully concluded Event Three of its 2026 Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 series with Double Vision Jazz Ensemble + Invoke at 𝑀𝑖𝑑𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘 𝑎𝑡 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑘𝑠.

Thank you to the musicians, everyone who joined us, and our presenting and supporting partners: Austin Jazz Society, Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

A few scenes from a very special afternoon at Eddie Durham Park, where Double Vision Jazz Ensemble had the honor of headlining the 2026 Eddie Durham Jazz Fest in the city where Eddie Durham was born.

with special guests Andre Hayward — trombone and Tommy Howard — guitar.
Our program brought Eddie Durham’s music into the present through new arrangements, improvisation, and the Texas jazz tradition he helped shape. We were especially glad to share the day with Eddie’s daughter, Topsy Durham, who served as festival emcee.
Presented by the The Calaboose African American History Museum, with support including the Texas Commission on the Arts and Arts-San Marcos, Texas.
Double Vision Jazz Ensemble is the principal performing ensemble of H Project Performing Arts Association (HPPAA) and a Texas Commission on the Arts 2026–2028 Texas Touring Roster artist.

Double Vision Jazz Ensemble headlines the 2026 Eddie Durham Jazz Fest this Saturday in San Marcos!

Join us Saturday, October 10, from 11:00 AM–5:00 PM at Eddie Durham Park for a free, family-friendly celebration of the life and legacy of San Marcos-born jazz innovator Eddie Durham — arranger, trombonist, guitarist, composer, and one of the pioneering figures in the development of amplified guitar in jazz.
Double Vision performs at 3:45 PM, closing the musical program with a full set celebrating Texas jazz history through live performance, original arrangements, improvisation, and contemporary interpretation.
Double Vision Jazz Ensemble is the principal performing ensemble of H Project Performing Arts Association and is listed on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster for 2026–2028.
We’re grateful to The Calaboose African American History Museum for presenting this important community celebration, and to everyone helping preserve and share Eddie Durham’s extraordinary contribution to American music.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥 We’re grateful to the City of Austin Government for selecting Hank Hehmsoth’s 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑇𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠 for 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞’𝐬 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖 at Austin City Hall.
The work is installed as #𝟑𝟏 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 & 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐦, where it is the only artwork shown on the official exhibition floor map. 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑇𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠 is part of Hank’s ongoing interdisciplinary project 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 / 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 — 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐚𝐳𝐳 𝐒𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬, which explores how rhythm, improvisation, gesture, memory, and sound can leave visual traces through color and layered composition.
The October 2 opening reception also brought music, visual art, and poetry together. 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐙𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐈𝐈 read a poem written for the exhibition opening, and it was a pleasure to share the evening with him and the Austin arts community.
This year’s People’s Gallery works were reviewed by local visual-arts professionals 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧̃𝐨, 𝐌𝐨𝐲𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐣𝐢, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐇𝐨. The exhibition remains on view through 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖.
The first-floor atrium may be visited 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲–𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟖 𝐚.𝐦.–𝟔 𝐩.𝐦. Viewing the exhibition in its entirety is available by guided tour through the City of Austin.
