The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing is driving a massive surge in electricity demand, creating a significant boost for the fossil fuel industry.

Here in Colorado, Larimer County has temporarily banned the construction of large data centers. Last month, commissioners in Weld County voted to allow them inside industrial zones as long as they meet water use, noise pollution, and zoning requirements. Denver City Council just approved a one-year data center ban citing the need for more concrete plans for regulation. Jefferson County followed with their own temporary moratorium.

However, we have not taken any tangible state-wide action to regulate data centers. A proposed bill to install guardrails around new data center development failed to pass during the most recent legislative session.

El fracking y el cambio climático provocado por los combustibles fósiles están afectando de manera desproporcionada a los latinos de Colorado. El aumento en la intensidad y frecuencia del calor extremo, consecuencia del cambio climático, pone en peligro a trabajadores y comunidades, exacerbando las vulnerabilidades socioecológicas que los latinos ya padecen. En Colorado, la concentración de pozos de petróleo y gas es mucho mayor en los condados con una alta población latina. Aunque los condados con una elevada concentración de latinos representan el 33% del total de condados del estado, el 58% de todos los pozos de petróleo y gas se encuentran ubicados precisamente en estas comunidades.

Al detener la expansión del fracking, podemos proteger a las poblaciones más vulnerables de Colorado. Los habitantes de Colorado que gozan de mayores recursos y privilegios deben alzar la voz en defensa de nuestros vecinos latinos y exigir una transición rápida hacia energías limpias y renovables.

Fracking and fossil fueled climate change is disproportionately impacting Latino Coloradans. The rise in intensity and frequency of extreme heat due to climate change is endangering workers and communities, exacerbating the socio-ecological vulnerabilities already experienced by Latinos. In Colorado, the presence of oil and gas wells is more densely packed in High Latino Counties. Even though counties with high concentrations of Latinos account for 33% of all counties in, 58% of all oil and gas wells are located in these same communities.

By stopping the expansion of fracking, we can protect Colorado’s most vulnerable populations. Wealthy and advantaged Coloradans must stand up for our Latino neighbors and demand that we swiftly transition to clean renewable energy.

From requiring chemical disclosure to mandating water testing, these bills—the FRAC, CLOSE, SHARED, CLEANER, and FRESHER Acts—aim to hold the industry accountable once and for all.
