COHN is pleased to announce that we were chosen to receive Congressionally Directed Spending funds to support more hygienists to deliver community-based oral health care to children across the state.

The Children's Oral Health Network is filling gaps in children's dentistry. The nonprofit works to ensure that effective prevention, education, and treatment tools reach all children in Maine. Executive director Becca Matusovich explained they plan to use the more than half a million dollars to buy training equipment that will help hygienists at independent practices.

She said, "We know that for a child to be healthy and succeed in school, and in life, they need to be able to get preventative dental care and any cavities that do develop need to be found quickly so they can be treated while they’re still small, and kids who go without that early treatment are much more likely to develop bigger problems that can really impact their overall health, well-being, success in school."

Sen. Susan Collins secured the funding in the "labor, health and human services, and education appropriations bill."

Representative Lori K. Gramlich has been a longtime champion for children’s oral health, and we are deeply grateful for her partnership in developing and passing important legislation over the years. Her collaborative work on this bill has earned unanimous, bipartisan support in the Health and Human Services Committee, because Mainers know that oral health matters, and we know that together we have the tools to help children grow up healthy. 🦷💙

Today is Oral Health Day at the State House! It was so great to connect with these dedicated advocates for improving oral health outcomes in our state.

Dental disease is THE most common chronic condition affecting Maine children — and untreated dental disease harms physical health, school performance, self-esteem and more.

That's why I'm sponsoring legislation to help more Maine children access much-needed oral health care. LD 1746 received unanimous bipartisan support during initial votes last year and now awaits funding before it can receive final approval by the Legislature.

I'll keep working hard for children's oral health — and I'm glad to be working alongside such wonderful advocates!
