“The work of children is about learning to read.” 💙📚

Powerful words from Dr. Terri McFadden, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Board member and Georgia Medical Director.

Every story shared helps build the foundation for a child’s future. There is no better way to prepare children for success than early interventions like Reach Out and Read - starting at birth! In all 50 states, Reach Out and Read helps families make reading part of their everyday routines and part of building a trusted relationship with their clinicians.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening our collective commitment to protecting children and supporting families in our community. Since 2016, Reach Out and Read Georgia has partnered with the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, Office of Prevention and Support who recognizes prevention and early interventions yield the most promising of results for families across Georgia.

Yesterday we were honored to stand alongside our partners at Positive Childhood Alliance Georgia and the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month. We wore blue—the color symbolizing child abuse prevention—to show our support and help raise awareness.

A special thank you to Governor Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp for taking the time to recognize the vital role prevention plays in supporting children and families.

For a lot of kids, screens are the first “pages” they learn to navigate — so when they’re handed a book, it’s not always intuitive.

Which is exactly why those early moments with real books matter so much.

It’s not about doing it perfectly. It’s just about helping them get familiar with books, falling in love with a parent’s voice — and learning that stories exist off the screen, too. 💛

🎉 Reach Out and Read Georgia was honored to participate in Georgia Reads Day at the Capitol and to be recognized, alongside other partners, as a recipient of the Georgia Reads Community Award from the Georgia Council on Literacy. This recognition affirms the vital role pediatricians play in advancing early literacy and strengthening the education ecosystem. ✨

We extend our sincere appreciation to Chairman Scott Johnson, Georgia Reads Ambassador and Super Bowl Champion Malcolm Mitchell, Bryttney Bailey, and the dedicated members of the Georgia Council on Literacy in attendance, including Garry McGiboney, Noris Price, and Dayle Burns. Thank you as well to Stacey Lutz with the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and Arianne Weldon, Director of Get Georgia Reading, for their leadership and collaboration. We also appreciate members of the Georgia General Assembly, including Representative Erwin, Representative Dubnik, and Senator Hickman, who joined in recognizing the importance of early literacy across our state. 💫

It was wonderful to see many valued partners at the Capitol, including the Junior League of Atlanta, where our Executive Director Amy Erickson is a sustaining member, and GEEARS: Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students, among many others working to advance outcomes for Georgia’s children and families. ♥️

A special thank you to the incredible Reach Out and Read Georgia team whose leadership and dedication make this work possible each day: Dr. Terri McFadden, Georgia Medical Director and President of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Amy Erickson, Executive Director; Karolina Klinger, Program Director; Cedric Forbes, Associate Director of Development; Leslie Vestal and Kim Thomas, Program Managers; and Brandon Hembree with Impact Public Affairs. 🩺💙

Through Reach Out and Read’s research-based model, pediatricians across Georgia are helping build the pipeline of children entering Pre-K and kindergarten ready to learn, delivering a two-generation intervention that supports children while equipping parents with the tools to build strong reading routines at home—laying the foundation for school readiness and lifelong success. 📚♥️
