Last week, The Carter Center welcomed employers, HR professionals, benefits leaders, and workplace wellness advocates to Coverage & Culture: Employer Symposium for Workplace Mental Health, a day focused on advancing mental health parity and creating workplaces where employees can thrive because their insurance covers their mental and physical health equally.

A highlight of the symposium was the launch of an Employer’s Toolkit: Championing Employee Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Insurance Coverage, a resource that makes the business case for investing in mental health and offers practical guidance for improving care. When employers invest in mental health coverage and supportive workplace cultures, we all benefit.

We recently completed another successful mass drug administration campaign to fight blinding trachoma, distributing over 8 million treatments in 48 districts in Amhara, Ethiopia. This enormous undertaking could not have happened without the support of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, more than 7,400 health extension workers, and more than 1,060 field supervisors and coordinators. At The Carter Center this week, 12 exemplary civic leaders from Georgia were recognized by the Georgia Democracy Resilience Network at the third annual Civic Excellence Awards Dinner.

The awards dinner brought together leaders from across the political spectrum to celebrate those that strengthen communities, encourage respectful dialogue, and promote a healthy democratic society.

Champion Awards recognized GA Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, State Election Board Member Sara Tindall Ghazal, DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Defender Awards honored Dr. Eric Castater, James Hall, Soumaya Khalifa, Joseph Kirk, Andrew Lewis, and Rev. Sean Smith.

Chris Smith received the inaugural Emerging Leader Award, while Carroll County Poll Manager Susan Emmons received the Excellence in Election Administration Award.

We are grateful to all of this year’s honorees for strengthening Georgia’s communities and democracy.

A U.S. delegation supported by The Carter Center recently returned from a study tour in Brasilia, Brazil, where they met with civil society experts and government officials to talk about ways to strengthen the rule of law, democracy, and public institutions.

Participants heard about Brazil's recent democratic gains and challenges, with the goal of applying what they learned here at home. As the U.S. experiences the kind of democratic decline that many other countries around the globe have faced, lessons from abroad are ever more crucial. We’re grateful to our host institutions and guest panelists and are excited to see what our study tour participants do next.

Less than two decades ago, a young mother in Liberia struggling with postpartum depression might have had nowhere to turn — the entire nation of 5 million had just one psychiatrist.

Today, thanks to more than 1,000 clinicians and community workers The Carter Center helped train, Liberia counts about 17.5 mental health providers per 100,000 people — above the global median of 13.

Mental healthcare is now fully in the hands of Liberia’s government, and we’re carrying what we learned to other African nations.
