Himalayan Children's Charities For 25 years HCC has been providing quality education, mentorship & loving care to children in Nepal. For more information please visit hccnepal.org

Himalayan Children’s Charities (HCC) was founded in 2000 by Susan and Bruce Keenan, after Bruce returned from a trekking expedition in Nepal where he witnessed the dire circumstances faced by the country’s orphaned and abandoned children. Since then, HCC has been providing nurturing care, quality education, and cutting-edge mentorship to over 50 children in the Kathmandu-based program. In 2016, we

celebrate our first group of 10 students graduating, 8 with university educations! All HCC youth receive communication and leadership training, as well as one-on-one counseling services. In response to the earthquakes in 2015, HCC established a collaborative, local educational scholarship and relief program, the Dhading Children’s Initiative (DCI). DCI supports 97 children earthquake survivors orphaned in the quakes. HCC’s signature program in Kathmandu has been operating for over 15 years. There are currently 51 students in the program, all of whom are orphaned or abandoned, and have no family support. Most of these children were rescued from the overcrowded and underfunded state run orphanage system, and several more children were taken in during the 1996-2006 Civil War. Since 2000, HCC has been providing these children with day-to-day care and support, education through the technical degree or university level, and ongoing life skill training, career counseling, and individualized exit planning so that they possess the necessary tools and confidence for achieving their life goals. The infrastructure of HCC’s signature program includes the Khushi Ghar (Happy Home) group home for students in grades 11 and 12; two annex apartments for university students; house parents, and provisions of all necessities including education, food, clothes and medicine. Transportation, Internet, and all school-related costs are covered. The children also have access to psychological counseling, communication training, self-esteem coaching and private tutoring. HCC’s Dhading Children’s Initiative (DCI) is a collaborative earthquake relief program that addresses the increased vulnerabilities of the over 100 children orphaned by the earthquake throughout the Dhading district, as well as of several children from neighboring districts. DCI’s vision is to invest in the education and well-being of children earthquake survivors as a pathway for sustainable rebuilding in their communities. The mission of DCI is to enable child earthquake survivors, who lost at least one parent in the disaster, to continue their studies and remain with surviving family in their home or neighboring communities. The scholarship covers school-related fees including books, stationary, uniforms, tuition, and exam fees, as well as stipends for basic needs such as medicine and warm clothes. A higher education scholarship fund provides assistance to DCI students who graduate from the 10th grade and wish to pursue a technical degree. The work of HCC is made possible by the support of a caring community of individuals like you, committed to the empowerment of underprivileged children and youth in Nepal. Join us in creating possibilities for self-reliance and realization for some of the most vunerable, yet deserving, children in the world.

Learning doesn't only happen inside the classroom 🎨🌿💛

Through our RISE (Rural Investments in Student Education) Program, students have opportunities to explore their creativity, build confidence, and learn through play and hands-on activities!

Moments like these encourage self-expression, problem-solving, and connection with peers- all important parts of a child's development alongside their education.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn (& create!) in a supportive environment.

Ambika, a PEAK Program student at HCC, is currently gaining hands-on experience through her internship at the Central Veterinary Laboratory, a leading institution for animal health diagnostics and disease prevention in Nepal!

During her placement, Ambika has worked across multiple departments, developing practical skills in microbiology, including bacterial culturing and Antimicrobial Sensitivity Testing (AST), before moving into the postmortem unit. There, she helps investigate disease outbreaks in poultry, identifying lesions, processing samples, and supporting veterinarians in recommending treatments to farmers.

Most recently, her work has helped her better understand the impact of avian influenza (bird flu), knowledge that Ambika says helped her raise awareness amongst her peers.

We are incredibly proud of Ambika for her dedication to learning and the meaningful impact she is already making through her work!!👏❤️

In many rural communities across Nepal, financial hardship and limited resources can make continuing an education difficult.

Through our RISE (Rural Investments in Student Education) Program, HCC helps vulnerable and at-risk children access the education and support they need to stay in school and build brighter futures.

By providing scholarships, school supplies, and ongoing support, we help ensure that students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams.

Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Learn more about how you can help by visiting: https://www.hccnepal.org/volunteer/

One of our PEAK Program students, Rita, recently had the opportunity to lead a treatment-based dental camp at a secondary school in Nepal as part of her clinical training!

During the camp, 80 students and 25 parents received dental screenings, with around 35 students receiving treatments including Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) and extractions.

For Rita, the experience was not only a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community, but also an important step in strengthening her practical skills and confidence as a future dental professional 🦷🦷

Through our RISE (Rural Investments in Student Education) Program, HCC provides support to vulnerable and at-risk children in rural Nepal, helping reduce barriers that can prevent them from staying in school.

Alongside scholarships and educational support, aid distribution helps ensure students have access to basic necessities, creating greater stability for children and families facing difficult circumstances.

In communities where education is not always guaranteed, these forms of support can make a real difference in helping children continue to learn.

At HCC, we see every day how guidance, encouragement, patience, and care can help a child grow with confidence and hope for the future.

Whether by birth, choice, or circumstance, the people who nurture and support children leave a lasting impact that reaches far beyond childhood.

To all the mothers and mother figures in our community, thank you for the strength, compassion and love you share so freely❤️

Meet Pushpa, one of our recent PEAK Program graduates who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Travel and Tourism. She is currently completing an internship at a five-star hotel in Thailand!

When asked about an experience at HCC that has always stuck with her, Pushpa shared:

“The night stay at Godawari with the entire HCC family, celebrating Susan Aunt’s birthday with swimming, dancing, singing, and so much joy. It was such a special and magical moment.

It was our first time celebrating her birthday that way, and it still holds a very dear place in my heart.

Those simple, happy times together as one big HCC family always feel the warmest.”

We are so proud of everything Pushpa has accomplished and so excited to see where this next chapter takes her!! ❤️

Meet Bina, one of our recent PEAK Program graduates who earned her Bachelors degree in Travel & Tourism Management, and now works as a Trekking guide in Nepal!

When asked how it feels to reach this milestone, Bina shared:

"Reaching this milestone feels deeply emotional for me, almost overwhelming in the best way. There was a time when opportunities like this felt distant, almost impossible. I remember moments filled with doubt, uncertainty, and questions about whether I would ever make it this far. But somehow, through every challenge, I kept going, and with the support I received through HCC, I found the strength to continue and believe in myself.

This journey was never just about education. It was about discovering who I am. It was about learning to stand back up after falling, about finding resilience in the hardest moments, and realizing that I am stronger than I ever thought I could be. Every struggle, every setback shaped me, pushed me, and helped me grow into the person I am today.

Graduating doesn’t feel like just my achievement, it feels like a shared victory. It carries the love, encouragement, and belief that others had in me, especially during the times when I couldn’t believe in myself. That means everything to me.

Now, as I step into this new chapter, I do so with hope in my heart and confidence in my steps. And more than anything, I carry a quiet promise within me: to one day give back, to support others the way I was supported, and to be part of someone else’s journey of hope."

Seeing Bina reach this milestone has been incredibly special, and we couldn’t be prouder of her!! ❤️
