💜 Learning to See Dementia Differently
Our Campbell-Stone Sandy Springs staff recently participated in Dementia Friends training, brought to us by Maria Mayhan, Dementia Care Specialist, LMSW, CDP, Aging & Independence Services at the Atlanta Regional Commission . We are grateful to Maria for sharing her knowledge and helping our team better understand how we can respond to dementia with greater understanding, compassion, and care.
We explored the different types of dementia, the difference between normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease, and what it can actually feel like to experience life with dementia. We also learned practical ways to improve communication, interactions, and the overall experience of those living with cognitive changes.
While this training is especially valuable in our work with older adults, the lessons go far beyond the workplace. At some point in our lives, most of us will know, love, or interact with someone living with dementia — a family member, friend, neighbor, or member of our community.
When we learn to look beyond the behavior and see the person, we create more patience, dignity, connection, and compassion.
Understanding changes everything. 💜
