Grief doesn’t have a timeline, a right way, or a one size fits all journey. It can look like tears, silence, laughter, anger, memories, or simply getting through the day.

Today, we honor those who are grieving, the losses we can see and the ones we cannot. May we give ourselves and each other permission to feel, remember, and heal in our own time.

You are not alone. Your grief matters. šŸ¤šŸ¤

Athens Parent Wellbeing is recruiting new board members to serve on our Board of Directors for the next two years!

Our board is a group of typically 10-12 members of our community that have a passion for families, mental wellbeing, and non-profit management. We meet ten times a year on a monthly basis, on one Saturday of each month from 8:30-10:30am in Athens. The board meeting dates are determined in advance. We also have biannual social gatherings in June & December when we do not have formal board meetings.

I was walking downtown today to go to the bank and shop locally for some mamas when I spotted this message on the Georgia Theatre marquee.

Earlier today I was listening to Dolly and her song, ā€œI will always love you,ā€ played. I didn’t realize the history, that she had written it as she was parting ways in a musical partnership and later Whitney Houston took it beyond. As I listened I couldn’t help but feel all the missings of someone so pure and good. I couldn’t help but roll all my father’s recent loss into Dolly loss and back again.

My youngest asked me why I was crying, and that I shouldn’t be so sad. I told her, ā€œNot all tears are sad.ā€ I was so very happy to have been able to experience all the beauty and goodness of two humans that loved so fully.

What was the first thing you thought after giving birth? I thought my daughter looked surprisingly like a squirrel šŸæļø, and I was worried her bow legs might stay like that forever.

What did you share with family and friends about your birth story? What did you keep to yourself? Did you feel good, bad or neutral about it? Was there anything in your story that you wish had turned out differently? Were you pleasantly surprised about anything? What do we know going into birth, and what do we learn on the flipside? What feelings and thoughts do we have about our experiences and what do we feel has changed inside our bodies?

There is so much that we don’t share. Let’s have a community conversation about what we carry after having a baby. Tuesday, August 25th, 5:30-7 pm Athens-Clarke County Library’s Appleton Auditorium, Free!

Compared to white women, Black women are twice as likely to experience maternal mental health conditions but half as likely to receive treatment. Health disparities are shaped by everyday conditions like safe housing, access to healthy food, clean air and water, and experiences with discrimination or violence. Systemic inequities and barriers to care make it harder for some communities to stay healthy. For Black women, chronic stress from these challenges can even cause the body to age faster, a process known as ā€œweathering.ā€ But with awareness, equity-focused policies, and better access to care, we can build a future where everyone has a fair chance at good health.
