Hands On Historic Athens is so grateful for friends like the Athens Jaycees! This front porch was uneven and wobbly, and when plans went from "replace what's necessary" to "rebuild it all" they gifted this elderly homeowner with knowing she can safely get in and out of her house. Funding for materials made possible thanks to a CDBG grant from Athens-Clarke County Housing & Community Development Department...thanks all around!

Gutters and downspouts are so important but these were long past their prime. Thanks to contractor Jesus Vera (Vera's garage doors repair), this 1920s home got some long-term help at no cost to the homeowners. Individuals are eligible for assistance if they own a single-family home built before 1973 and meet low-to-moderate income requirements. Hands On Historic Athens receives lots of applications for porch step railings, and this one turned out great thanks to our friends at JOMA Construction who generously donated their labor replacing rotted wood and adding handrails. We're so grateful for this amazing partnership, and thankful for materials funding from the Athens-Clarke County Housing & Community Development Department and Truist!

These small projects may not look like much, but this homes' owner was dealing with a door that didn't close properly because of threshold issues, a leaky bathroom sink and damaged vanity, and a kitchen counter that extended about a foot off the wall due to old DIY plumbing repairs...thanks to Athens Worx, all of these "little" issues are fixed (as was that DIY plumbing) and our homeowner is truly thrilled. Small projects add up in big ways, and Hands On Historic Athens is so grateful to have Athens Worx on our team!

Big thanks to Bone Dry Roofing Company for getting this roof tarped then replaced before a beast of a storm rolled through a bit ago. The home had a leak that was getting worse quickly, and with their help, Hands On Historic Athens caught this before damage got much (much!) worse. So grateful for these partnerships!

Kudos to this team from Franklin Residential College for painting over the weekend! It was early and it was COLD, and their volunteer time helped Hands On Historic Athens stretch some hard-earned grant dollars. Most of this crew had worked with us before, and we're so grateful for their continued support!

Hands On Historic Athens Director Jody Hoffman Graichen had two site visits this morning for future projects, and both owners commented that their houses were "Jim Walters Homes"...think Sears Catalog Homes, but simpler. The homes were sold as "shells" meaning the company would complete the outside so it was watertight and the customer would finish the inside. The homes we checked out today were in Brooklyn (built 1961) and East Athens (built 1972)...wonder how many more are out there??

It may not look like much, but the back of this 1930s Cobbham house has received new siding, a new porch roof and new gutters...all keeping its owner safe and dry, and all done little by little over time by generous Hands On Historic Athens vendors Athens Worx, Eastside Roofing, and Bone Dry Roofing Company. This work was made possible with our CDBG funds administered by Athens-Clarke County Housing & Community Development Department and a grant award from the and Truist. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Many thanks to Kristen Bergman Morales, Melanie Jattuso Ford, Athens Area Women In Construction, and our small but MIGHTY volunteer crew that painted this Brooklyn home (along with a bonus volunteer). Big thanks also go to JOMA Construction to sending in the professionals to help with some minor fixes that will set homeowners' minds at ease. All little improvements that count in big, big ways!
