Almost everybody who has not been baptized has a reason, and they have usually had the same reason for years.

I am not ready yet. There is something in my life I have not dealt with. When I have been walking with God a bit longer, when I am more sure, when I am doing better at this than I am doing right now, then I will.

Or the quieter one, which nobody says out loud. I do not want to stand up in front of a room full of people in soaking wet clothes.

Neither of those is a stupid reason.

But there is a man in Acts who had none of it sorted out. No church, no preparation, and he had known about Jesus for roughly an hour. He looked out of his chariot, saw water at the side of the road, and asked one question.

What is to prevent me?

Nothing did. They stopped the chariot.

Nobody tells you about the Monday.

You made a decision. Maybe you gave your life to Christ, maybe you got baptized, maybe you just decided quietly that you were done with something that had been costing you. For a while it was good. Then life showed up, and you did the thing you said you would never do again.

What most of us do next is go quiet. We stop praying because it feels dishonest. We sit a little further back. We wait until we feel worthy enough to come back, and that day never quite arrives.

Peter denied Jesus three times beside a charcoal fire. The next time he saw Him, Jesus had lit another one, on a beach, and was cooking breakfast.

Not a lecture. Breakfast.

Here’s the honest truth: nobody drifts into the person God can use.

You don’t wake up one morning patient, steady, and strong. You don’t float into a deep faith. It comes the same way an athlete gets strong or a grandmother learns to cook for forty without a recipe... small things, done over and over, on the days you feel like it and the days you don’t.

Tonight we’re in 1 Timothy 4, and Paul hands us a word straight out of the gym:

“Train yourself to be godly.” (1 Timothy 4:7)

We’re talking about the gym of the soul... and why the quiet, daily training nobody claps for is exactly where God builds the people He can trust.

You were never meant to do this on your own strength.

The night before He died, Jesus made His friends a promise. He said the Father would send them a Helper. Someone called to come alongside them. And He said that Helper would never leave.

That promise was not just for them.

"I will not abandon you as orphans. I will come to you."
John 14:18
