Ankeny Presbyterian Church was organized by the Presbytery of Des Moines in 1964 to provide a Presbyterian-Reformed witness to the greater Ankeny community. This congregation serves the communities of Ankeny, Polk City, Bondurant, Huxley, and Cambridge, along with portions of Des Moines. Come join us! A Life Worth Giving: Love as Your Legacy
1 Corinthians 13:8–13 | Sunday, October 25

What will people remember about us? Our accomplishments, possessions, and successes—or the ways we made them feel loved?

In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul reminds us that much of what we consider important is temporary. Knowledge fades, accomplishments are forgotten, and even our greatest achievements eventually pass away. But love never ends.

As we conclude our stewardship series, A Life Worth Giving, Pastor Eric reflects on the enduring influence of his grandfather, whose simple expressions of love and delight continue to shape his life decades later.

Stewardship is about much more than money. It's about how we use the gifts of our lives—our time, resources, compassion, and attention—to make a difference for others. The love we receive becomes the love we share, often reaching farther than we could ever imagine.

Perhaps our greatest legacy is not what remains of us, but what remains because of us: love living on in the lives of others.

Jesus says, “Consider the ravens. Consider the lilies.” Look closely at the world, he suggests, and beneath all our anxiety we may discover something deeper: generosity lies at the heart of God.

This Sunday, we’ll reflect on the ordinary gifts that sustain us, the grace that carries us through difficult seasons, and the gratitude that grows when we recognize how much of life is received rather than achieved. Before we ever place anything in God’s hands, we discover that we have always been held in them.

What happens when scripture moves beyond the sanctuary and becomes part of our everyday lives?

In “Bringing Scripture Home,” we explore how the stories of faith can shape our imagination and help us see our lives differently. Scripture doesn’t require us to have all the answers. It invites us to bring our questions, experiences, joys, and struggles into conversation with God’s story—and with one another.

Like trees planted beside living water, we may discover over time that our roots have grown deeper than we knew, reaching into a grace that was there all along.

What matters most in the life of faith is not appearing perfect, but allowing our hearts to be shaped by grace.

In this week’s sermon, “From the Heart,” we’ll explore Jesus’ challenge in Mark 7 and consider how God forms us over a lifetime—through worship and prayer, friendship and service, joy and sorrow, and the simple practice of sharing life together. We may be imperfect vessels, but God continues to work within us, shaping our hearts more and more into the likeness of Christ.

And in the end, a heart shaped by grace becomes a vessel through which God’s love is poured into the world.

Life has a way of knocking us off balance. In Ephesians, we are told to “stand firm”—not through toughness or sheer determination, but by trusting the gifts God provides: truth, peace, faith, prayer, scripture, and one another. Standing firm isn’t about being stronger. It’s about learning where to place our weight.

This Sunday we'll explore one of Bible’s most beloved Jesus stories: the feeding of the five thousand.

When the disciples saw scarcity, Jesus saw possibility. A child's simple lunch—five loaves and two fish—didn't seem like much. But placed in Christ's hands, it became more than enough.

In a world that often tells us there isn't enough time, hope, love, or resources to go around, Jesus invites us to trust a different story. Small acts of kindness, generous hearts, welcoming communities, and ordinary people can become extraordinary channels of God's grace.

Join us as we discover how Christ still transforms small offerings into abundant blessings—and how each of us has something meaningful to bring.
