🦷🏛️ Advocacy in Action: A Familiar Face for Dental Hygienists!

What an exciting time for dental hygiene in Iowa!

We are proud to recognize our very own Kara Parcher, IDHA Secretary, for connecting with Dani Ollenburg, candidate for the Iowa House of Representatives, alongside our IDHA lobbyist, Tom Cope (not pictured).

What makes this connection especially exciting? Dani is a former dental hygienist herself! With firsthand experience in our profession, she understands the important role dental hygienists play in patient care, preventive services, and improving access to oral healthcare.

The possibility of having someone with a dental hygiene background serving in the Iowa Legislature is an exciting prospect for our profession!

As IDHA continues preparing for the upcoming legislative session and advancing our legislative priorities, building relationships with policymakers who understand the challenges and opportunities facing dental hygienists remains incredibly valuable.

Thank you, Kara, for continuing to represent Iowa's dental hygienists, and thank you, Dani, for taking the time to connect!

We look forward to continuing meaningful conversations, strengthening relationships, and advocating for a brighter future for dental hygiene and oral healthcare across Iowa!

Advocating for the Future of Dental Hygiene in Iowa!

The Iowa Dental Hygienists' Association (IDHA) was pleased to be represented by President Ashley Whiteing and Vice President Jen Faux at a recent event where we had the opportunity to meet Iowa gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand.

A special thank you to Jon Murphy, with our lobbying firm, for attending and continuing to support IDHA's legislative advocacy efforts!

As we prepare for the upcoming legislative session, we look forward to strengthening relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and continuing to advocate for policies that support dental hygienists, advance our profession, and improve access to oral healthcare for Iowans.

Our work is far from finished, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead!

My name is Rachael Wiebe, and I am a doctoral student at National University. I am conducting a research study to equitable work practices to reduce burnout among allied dental faculty.
I am recruiting individuals who meet all of these criteria:
You are age 18 or older.
Are currently or have been employed with a dental assistant or dental hygiene program approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Affiliated with a program in the Midwest United States (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin)
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to do the following activities:
Participate in an online interview via Zoom for 60 minutes
Review the interview summary via email for 10-15 minutes
During these activities, you will be asked questions about:
Length of employment
Responsibilities
Workplace challenges
Stress management

🚨 **Some VERY exciting news for Iowa Dental Hygienists!** 🦷✨

The Iowa Dental Association (IDA) has developed an **Iowa Dental Board-approved local anesthesia course** that will allow dental hygienists to obtain the required clinical experience at the **Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM)!**

Numerous concerns have recently been voiced at Iowa Dental Board meetings regarding the difficulty dental hygienists face when searching for a local anesthesia course that satisfies the Iowa Dental Board’s requirements to renew a local anesthesia permit. Recognizing that this limited availability can impact access to care in Iowa, the IDA developed this new training opportunity.

**How it works:**

🦷 Dental hygienists must first complete the didactic portion of the training through the **nine-part ADA Continuing Education Local Anesthesia courses**.

🦷 Once the didactic portion is complete, hygienists can **register to volunteer at IMOM** and obtain the necessary clinical experience on-site under the supervision of dentists working at the clinic.

This is such an exciting new opportunity for Iowa dental hygienists who have been searching for an accessible pathway to complete these requirements while also supporting the incredible mission of IMOM and access to care across our state!
