🎃🍻 Rotary Around Ankeny!

Members of the Rotary Clubs of Ankeny enjoyed a beautiful fall evening at Pumpkins & Pints in Uptown Ankeny on Saturday!

Events like this are one of our favorite ways to get out into the community, visit with our neighbors, have a little fun, and share what Rotary is all about — connecting people, serving others, and making a difference right here at home. 💙💛

A big thank-you to our Rotarians and friends who volunteered: Julian Rachu, Asia Deffeyes, Marie Kline, Anne Porter, Peggy Sue Bird, Phyllis Even, Matt Even, Steve Wieneke, and Brenda Wieneke. We appreciate you representing Rotary and helping make the evening a success!

Congratulations to our newest Rotary Leadership Institute graduates—Mia Kelly, Julian Rachu, and Marie Kline! 💙💛

These three Ankeny Evening Rotarians spent October 17–18 in Cedar Rapids learning more about Rotary alongside members from Districts 6000 and 5970.

We appreciate their commitment to growing as Rotarians and giving their time to strengthen our club. More knowledge, more connections, and more possibilities for serving our community!

🌍 October 24 is World Polio Day!

Our service starts here in Ankeny, but through Rotary, our impact reaches around the world. ❤️

The Rotary Club of Ankeny Evening joins Rotary members worldwide in supporting one shared goal: a world free of polio.

🌍 World Polio Day — October 24

As World Polio Day approaches, our Rotary meeting this week included a powerful reminder of why Rotary’s commitment to ending polio still matters.

We were honored to welcome Ed Arnold from the Rotary Club of Northwest Des Moines, who shared his family’s personal experience with polio.

Ed spoke about family members who contracted polio in the 1950s and the lasting effects the disease had on their lives. Hearing about polio through the experience of someone whose family lived it made the impact especially meaningful.

For many of us, polio is something we have only read about in history books. But for families who experienced it, its effects were very real — and in many cases, lifelong.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio around the world for decades, and incredible progress has been made. But the work is not finished.

This World Polio Day, October 24, we remember those whose lives were changed by polio and recommit ourselves to the goal of a world where no family has to experience it again.

Thank you, Ed, for sharing such an important piece of your family’s story with us. 💜🌎

🇮🇹🌎 Meet Asia Deffeyes — Our Rotary Youth Exchange Student!

At this week’s meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from our Rotary Youth Exchange student, Asia Deffeyes of Italy, as she shared about her home, her school and everything she has experienced in Iowa so far.

Asia attends a specialized linguistic school in Italy and spoke about some of the differences between school and daily life in Italy and the United States. She also shared photos of her home, family, sports and some of the new friendships and adventures she has already enjoyed since arriving in Iowa.

One thing was very clear — Asia is embracing her exchange year with an open mind, a sense of adventure and a willingness to experience something completely new. 💙

Rotary Youth Exchange is about so much more than travel. It gives young people the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture, build lifelong friendships and help create greater understanding between people from different parts of the world.

We are so happy to have Asia as part of our Rotary family this year and look forward to seeing where the rest of her Iowa adventure takes her!

We recently welcomed Ed Graybill to the Rotary Club of Ankeny Evening!

Ed also shared how much he and Carolyn have enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and learning about the service projects Rotary supports locally and around the world.

💙💛 Why Rotary?

People come to Rotary for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it starts with networking, sometimes service, sometimes simply wanting to feel more connected to the community.

For Kristofer Orth, it became something deeper.

“Initially, I joined Rotary as an opportunity to expand my business network. Since joining, I’ve found a more profound connection to the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self.’ Our club has given me opportunities to serve my community in ways I would not have individually, and I now think of my club and district as my Rotary family.”

That’s one of the things we love most about Rotary. You may come for one reason, but along the way you find friendships, purpose, opportunities to serve, and people who become part of your circle.

We know how to work hard, raise money for our community—and have a little fun along the way! 🌶️🎃

Last night’s Rotary Chili Cook-Off was full of delicious chili, fun costumes, laughter, and friendship. Thank you to Kristofer and Susan for hosting, and to everyone who brought something to share!

Congratulations to Susan Mitchell, who took home the title of Best Chili! 🏆
