In 2023, the Town of Wilmington, Massachusetts prioritized the conservation and digitization of death records documenting four World War II soldiers whose remains were returned home after the war.

Accompanying the records were Health Permit Markers, standard documents once attached to the soldiers’ coffins during transport back to the United States. In some cases, the markers themselves were causing damage to the records.

In this story, India Patel, then NEDCC Book Conservation Intern, and Assistant Town Clerk Meghan Jones share more about the history of the volume and the treatment that helped preserve it: https://www.nedcc.org/about/nedcc-stories/town-death-records
