Today's Policy Workgroup conversation focused on SB 196 and the broader legislative landscape in which it sits. Members discussed how differences between the House and Senate versions can complicate the path forward, requiring additional momentum and support to move through the remaining steps this session. We also talked through what happens if the bill does not pass this year, including the option for it to be reintroduced in the next legislative session.

A key part of the discussion centered on understanding the distinctions between lobbying, advocacy, and education, and how organizational roles and funding can shape what individuals and partners are able to do. The group also reviewed the current policy framework and spreadsheet together to support shared understanding and consistency in our approach.

If you are interested in helping shape how we engage in policy conversations like SB 196 or want to better understand how this work happens in practice, we welcome you to join the Policy Workgroup!

All are invited to join The Alliance Evaluation Workgroup learning session tomorrow (Thursday), May 7th, from 9:30-11 am, where we will be joined by Goldstream's data experts to discuss working with large datasets.

Pulling together large amounts of data to draw definitive conclusions is one of the more challenging parts of evaluation for many people. This month’s Evaluation and Learning Workgroup meeting will focus on interpreting and synthesizing large amounts of data. Members of the Goldstream Group will lead an informal presentation and discussion covering strategies to approach this process, as well as helpful tips to effectively present your findings. We hope you can join us!

How do you choose connection? A consistent theme when we ask this question, no matter one's age, is that caring for or being in the presence of animals is one of our greatest tools for grounding, surviving, and thriving.

We are grateful to Alliance member and energy healer, Karen, who shared how she chooses connection through her dog, Yuki Luna, and how he impacts her life. Not only do animals provide comfort and stability, they encourage us to move more, get outside, and cherish each moment.

Do you have a story of connection to share? Visit our Choose Connection campaign webpage, where you can add a word or phrase of connection on our digital connection map, share a story of connection (with photos or videos if comfortable), or request campaign materials to share in your own community.

We've got some great meetings lined up this month, starting this morning with an Evaluation Learning Session!

Topic: How to Synthesize Large Amounts of Data
April 2 | 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Join us for a focused learning session on how to synthesize large amounts of data. We’ll explore practical strategies for organizing, distilling, and making sense of complex or abundant information so it can be used effectively for decision-making, storytelling, and reporting. Whether you’re working with community data, survey results, or multiple data sources, this session will offer tools to help turn information into clear, actionable insights.

Contact Tesia Bobrycki ([email protected]) for the meeting invite. If you can't make it, stay tuned for a meeting recap. We'll also provide the video recording later this month.

We hope you can join us!

Want to help shape the direction of our work? Join the Strategic Design Workgroup.

This group is responsible for developing and refining the Common Agenda, the guiding document new members receive when they join. Right now, the workgroup is focused on making sure the Common Agenda clearly reflects our strategic goals, aligns with our Strategic Plan, and helps members understand how policy, data, and shared priorities fit together.

If you enjoy big-picture thinking, connecting ideas, and helping clarify the direction of collective work, we would love to have you join the conversation. New members are always welcome - contact Tesia Bobrycki ([email protected]) for a meeting invite!

Our policy workgroup is tracking some big movement this session, especially around alcohol policy and behavioral health, and there’s real opportunity to weigh in where it matters.

At our last meeting, the Policy Workgroup dug into a proposal to lower the legal BAC limit in Alaska. It’s a conversation grounded in data, public health impact, and what we’re seeing in communities across the state. We also reviewed several fast-moving bills that could shape access, funding, and prevention efforts moving forward.

This is the kind of work where your voice matters. If you’re interested in staying informed, helping shape recommendations, or speaking up on policies that impact Alaska communities, join us at the next Policy Workgroup meeting. Contact Alliance Coordinator Tesia Bobrycki: [email protected].

In late February, The Alliance members gathered for Calricaraq, a three-day training developed by the Yup’ik community to address historical trauma and promote healing and healthy living. The training was facilitated by Rose Domnick and Katrina Domnick, with support from Elder Evelyn Day and Danika Baile. Each of them shared not only the curriculum, but deeply personal stories, teachings, and reflections drawn from their own lives and the wisdom of their communities. It was an honor to witness and learn from them, and we are profoundly grateful for their generosity in sharing this work with us.

Last week, we spent time in our all-Alliance meeting sharing personal feedback on our experiences during Calricaraq. The discussion focused on the value of small group activities, lived experiences shared by presenters, and intentional energy shifts during sessions. Members shared how their learnings have transformed their personal and professional lives, and we discussed how we might integrate this training into other programs. Moving forward, there may be opportunities to hold this training more frequently, involve youth, and offer support for anyone interested in pursuing training to become a Calricaraq facilitator.

We want to thank the Yup’ik community for the years of care and knowledge that went into developing Calricaraq. This training is rooted in centuries of cultural knowledge, practice, and resilience. Their willingness to share it with us is both generous and profound, and we are grateful to receive these teachings.

If you have any questions about Calricaraq or future opportunities, please contact The Alliance Coordinator Tesia Bobrycki: [email protected].

Looking for more ways to connect with other Alliance members? The Communications & Social Norms Workgroup met earlier this month to talk about how we can better share what is happening across our communities and make it easier for members to stay engaged.

The group explored new ways to highlight member work through social media, including sharing photos, events, and stories from across the state. There was also discussion about upcoming opportunities to connect in person through community events, school outreach, and recovery celebrations this spring.

Want to be part of this important work? Follow along, share what is happening in your community, and consider joining this workgroup meeting in April to help shape how the Alliance stays connected. Email Alliance Coordinator Tesia Bobrycki at: [email protected] for more information.
