Throwback Thursday’s Continues…

Although construction on the clinic was completed around 2013, patients had already begun receiving care before the building was fully finished. Throughout those years, visiting medical teams continued to come to San Pedro and see patients.

It would be nearly 10 years after the clinic first began serving patients before someone would make the decision to take on the clinic full time.

Originally from Columbia, Dr. Luz Elena moved to the United States and built a career in medicine, first as a nurse and later as a doctor. She had practiced for many years and loved her work.

Around 2014-2015, Luz met Joe LoMonaco. In 2015, she began praying and seeking God about serving full time in Guatemala. She met with Emilio and Ester and they invited her to join the ministry.

By the end of 2015, Dr. Luz Elena had decided to leave her life in the US and move to San Pedro La Laguna.

What began as caring for the students of Colegio Bethel soon grew far beyond the school. Dr. Luz began caring for people throughout San Pedro, and her ministry eventually reached beyond the town itself as she traveled into the mountains to care for people with little access to a doctor.

The clinic had finally found its doctor. And through Dr. Luz, it’s reach would become far greater than anyone could have imagined.

Throwback Thursday continues...

Clean water changed more than anyone expected.

For years, students at Colegio Bethel faced a daily challenge outside the classroom. The water in San Pedro La Laguna is not safe to drink, and many children became sick from waterborne illness, leading to missed school days and ongoing health concerns.

Even today, the water in the community is not considered safe to drink.

Recognizing the need, Pam helped organize a water purification initiative. Through that effort, Proyecto Fe partnered with Living Water World Missions to make a long-term solution possible.

In 2013, a water purification system was installed at Colegio Bethel, providing students and staff with safe, clean drinking water at the school.

The impact was immediate. Sickness decreased, attendance improved, and daily life changed in a simple but meaningful way, students began to only drink the school’s purified water.

What had once been an everyday health risk became one less barrier to learning.

Fue un día lleno de sonrisas, alegría, diversión y momentos inolvidables. Ver a las familias compartir, reír y disfrutar juntas nos recordó lo valioso que es dedicar tiempo a quienes más amamos.
Cada juego, cada abrazo y cada sonrisa reflejaron la bendición de fortalecer los lazos familiares y crear recuerdos que permanecerán en el corazón.

It started with a few snacks.

As Pam spent her days at Colegio Bethel, she noticed something heartbreaking. Many students arrived at school hungry, making it difficult to focus on their lessons. Whenever she could, she purchased snacks out of her own pocket so the children would have something to eat during the school day.

As the need continued to grow, Pam knew something more sustainable was needed.

In 2006, she asked Liz to help organize a school snack program. A small makeshift kitchen was set up in one of the classrooms, where snacks could be prepared and served to the students.

The program quickly proved how important it was.

Then, in 2012, Proyecto Fe completed a permanent kitchen on the school campus, creating a dedicated space to prepare food for the students. For many students, that daily snack was the only food they would receive until they returned home that evening.

What began with one person noticing a need and another helping organize a solution grew into a lasting ministry that continues to care for students today.

Throwback Thursdays Continue...

Around 2004, ground was broken beside the school to begin construction of the medical clinic. What followed was years of work, fundraising, volunteer support, and faithful perseverance.

Little by little, the clinic took shape from bare ground, to foundations, walls, and finally to a completed facility.

What began as a dream to serve the students of Colegio Bethel grew into a place that would provide care not only for the school, but for the surrounding community as well.

Just as God had provided for the construction of the school, He was now providing for the next chapter of Emilio and Ester's vision.

In 2002, a medical clinic didn't exist yet, but the need did.

From the beginning, Emilio and Ester envisioned a school that would provide the same services available in the public schools, including access to medical care. But that dream was still years away.

In 2002, one of Proyecto Fe's first Medical Mission teams arrived at Colegio Bethel. With no clinic to operate from, classrooms were temporarily transformed into examination rooms where medical personnel checked students' hearing, provided basic care, and identified needs that might otherwise have gone untreated.

For many students, this was their first opportunity to receive these services.

The experience confirmed what Emilio and Ester had long believed: the community needed more than a school. It needed a permanent place where children and families could receive medical care.

The dream of a clinica was no longer just a vision, it had become a necessity.

Welcome back to another Throwback Thursday.

For three years, Pam served at Colegio Bethel teaching arts and crafts and English. The school had never had anything like an art class before, and students quickly grew to love her classes.

During those years, mission teams from Alaska regularly traveled to San Pedro. As they worked alongside Emilio and Ester, they also came to know Pam and witnessed the ministry she had quietly built within the school and community.

In 2000, Joe approached Pam and said, “We’ve been coming to San Pedro several times now, and we see you in your ministry. We’d like to help support you, but I can’t make any promises.”

At the time, Pam had no idea that simple conversation would eventually connect her to Proyecto Fe in a much deeper way and help shape the ministry for years to come.
