Welcome back to another Throwback Thursday.

For three years, Pam served at Colegio Bethel teaching arts and crafts and English. The school had never had anything like an art class before, and students quickly grew to love her classes.

During those years, mission teams from Alaska regularly traveled to San Pedro. As they worked alongside Emilio and Ester, they also came to know Pam and witnessed the ministry she had quietly built within the school and community.

In 2000, Joe approached Pam and said, “We’ve been coming to San Pedro several times now, and we see you in your ministry. We’d like to help support you, but I can’t make any promises.”

At the time, Pam had no idea that simple conversation would eventually connect her to Proyecto Fe in a much deeper way and help shape the ministry for years to come.

Last week was Pam’s birthday. This week, we look back at how Pam first became connected to Colegio Bethel.

Long before Colegio Bethel was in need of a larger school, Pam responded to God’s nudging to go on a mission trip. In 1992, she traveled with her church, Park Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts, to San Pedro La Laguna to help build Iglesia Bethel. Did you know the section of Iglesia Bethel named “Park Street” was named after that church?

Pam returned to San Pedro many times over the years, often traveling by herself. Then in 1998, God spoke to her in a dream:
“I can hear my people crying in the night. Who will love them?”

After hearing the message repeatedly, Pam prayed with Emilio and Ester about returning to San Pedro long-term. Together, they agreed to a two-year commitment.

On August 1, 1998, full of uncertainty, Pam arrived in Guatemala City—where Emilio was waiting for her.

Next week, we’ll share how Pam became connected to Proyecto Fe.

As we continue down memory lane...

In January 1997, the doors of the new school finally opened.

After months of construction, fundraising, mission teams, and faithful perseverance, the first floor of the building was completed so students would finally have a place to learn. Though much of the building still remained unfinished, as the school was planned to be 3 stories high, classes had begun.

In one of Ester’s first letters after the opening, she wrote about how happy and grateful they were to finally see children learning inside the new classrooms. She could not contain her joy!

As the school continued to grow, so did the support behind it. Mission teams continued traveling to Guatemala throughout 1997, and in December of that year, the first Proyecto Fe auction was held in Alaska—raising $10,000 worth of medicine for the clinic and marking the beginning of a fundraising tradition that would continue for years to come.

Another new branch of support also began to emerge. While many students were already sponsored through Compassion International, Proyecto Fe began encouraging supporters to sponsor teachers as well, helping provide for the staff needed at the rapidly growing school.

What had started as a single act of faith was becoming a community effort stretching far beyond San Pedro La Laguna.

Throughout 1996, Emilio's faith was standing strong, the walls were going up—and time was running short.

In June of 1996, a team from Bridge Builders in Colorado came alongside to work, helping move the vision forward.

Emilio continued building. Friends and family worked alongside him, hauling materials and raising the structure by hand. Resources were limited, and the need for a finished school was urgent.

Still, it wasn’t enough to complete what had been started. The goal was simple: finish the first floor so the school could open and the children would have a place to go.

In Alaska, Joe began organizing support—sharing the vision, raising funds, and preparing teams to go down to Guatemala. In December 1996, he brought two teams to help complete the first floor so Colegio Evangélico Bethel could open and the children would have a place to go.

When Joe arrived at Emilio’s property, he saw the foundation already started. He asked, “How much is this going to cost?...

When Joe arrived at Emilio’s property, he saw the foundation already started. He asked, “How much is this going to cost? How are you going to pay for this?”

Emilio simply replied, “I don’t know—but I can tell you, God is going to build a school in this place.”

Standing over the bare foundation stones, with nothing certain but their shared faith, the name Proyecto Fe—Project Faith—was born.

Joe returned to Alaska and faithfully provided everything the other schools had requested. But he couldn’t shake what he had seen in San Pedro. The need for an entire school stayed with him.

Our trip down memory lane continues...

A man named Joe, who lived in Alaska, was told in a dream to go to San Pedro.

In 1996, he arrived in Guatemala as a representative with Compassion International. He visited his sponsored children and some of the poorest schools in the country. He asked each school the same question: “What do you need? —don’t hold back”, and made a list of everything they said.

As his trip was coming to an end, he asked one more question:
“Is there any other school?”

His guide for the trip hesitated, there was one—across the lake in San Pedro...

Joe insisted on going.

And that’s where Joe met Emilio.

This week’s Throwback Thursday happens to be our Executive Director Elizabeth’s birthday, so we’re throwing it back to her very first trip to San Pedro!

In 2005, Heritage Christian School and Faith Christian Church combined forces to form a youth mission team. Her dad, Pat--former Board President, lead the Heritage kids.

They experienced the intimacies of daily home life in San Pedro: making tortillas, weaving, and (most importantly) building relationships. Today, friendships forged on that team lead our ministry.

Elizabeth’s commitment and dedication to the ministry have blessed generations, and her relationship forward leadership—the kind that builds trust, encourages others, and empowers people to grow—continues to shape our community today.

Join me in celebrating Elizabeth’s birthday!

Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!

Time for 30th anniversary Throw Back Thursday! 🫶🏼

Emilio and Ester started Colegio Bethel in 1990 at the home of a rancher, Don Juan Penéleu in San Pedro La Laguna. They had 104 students, Pre-K-3rd grade. In 1991, Compassion International came alongside them with their sponsorship program for students and helped support school operations.

By 1995, the school had outgrown Don Juan’s house and Iglesia Bethel, still under construction, loaned them their building for 1 year. Emilio stated, “Remember, when God takes something away, it is to give us something better, but we can’t yet visualize this something better.”

Emilio gathered friends and family at his home that was passed down to him by his father and prayed over it. With limited resources, they broke ground for the school foundation and Emilio financed building supplies whenever he had extra money.
