Trout Unlimited's Alaska Program (TU) works closely with anglers, commercial fishermen, Tribes, tourism operators, chefs, and many other Alaskans who care about our rivers and fish. While mostly healthy and abundant, Alaska's world-class salmon and trout populations face significant threats. TU's Alaska staff, volunteers, members, and partners work strategically to help ensure these fish and their
habitats are maintained for future generations to use and enjoy. Our focus areas include:
BRISTOL BAY
Home to the world’s largest sockeye salmon run, TU was intergral to stopping a key, federal permit for the proposed Pebble mine and is now focused on securing durable safeguards for the region from future incompatible mining proposals. We work with partners and anglers across the country to ensure Bristol Bay's world-class fisheries and the people who depend on them continue to thrive. SaveBristolBay.org
We also introduce Bristol Bay-area youth to fly fishing and facilitate training programs focused on preparing them for local jobs in the tourism and sportfishing industry. BristolBayRiverAcademy.org
TONGASS
In our largest national forest, TU champions efforts to conserve roadless areas and 77 of the most high-value salmon and steelhead watersheds that remain open to development that impacts fish. We also help facilitate the Forest Service initiative to transition away from damaging old-growth logging, and toward fishing, tourism, recreation & conserving habitat those sectors rely on. As a founding member and a sponsor of the Southeast Alaska Fish Habitat Partnership (SEAKFHP), we work to restore fish habitat and support data-gathering efforts in Southeast Alaska. seakfhp.org
TRANSBOUNDARY
In northwest British Columbia a mining boom is underway upstream of Southeast that threatens Alaska's salmon, rivers, tourism jobs, and unique way of life. These mines are likely to harm the waters and fish-based economies downstream with no financial benefit to Alaska. State Department and create needed protections. EKLUTNA RIVER & MAT-SU VALLEY
With partners, TU is working to bring the Eklutna River back to the thriving, salmon-filled waterway it once was. EklutnaRiver.org
We are also member and fiscal host of the Mat-Su Fish Habitat Partnership, which works to restore habitat and support research that will maintain vibrant fisheries and communities in the Mat-Su. MatSuSalmon.org
