Sometimes, impact comes full circle and in places where you might not expect.
Our Rural Community Resource & Volunteer Engagement Manager, Leanna Husmann, recently attended ASAC's Cedar Rapids Fall Luncheon in September. Jennifer Husmann spoke at the event and talked about advocacy work with youth, which included Leanna's story. Leanna got involved with prevention during her sophomore year of high school by joining Being Excellent and Staying Totally Safe (BEASTS), where she got to travel to Ohio for a regional prevention conference and also participate in a youth media campaign.
Leanna's story proves that you may never be too young to think advocacy doesn't make a difference in our community. To keep involved, Leanna serves on a local coalition that supports prevention efforts, including being the group's Treasurer.
"Getting involved with our school's advocacy group, BEASTS, has opened me up to possibilities, new experiences, and new friendships," Leanna said. "The opportunity to go to the Youth2Youth regional conference showed that if we work together, change is possible. I still carry the skills and the experiences I had with me to my career outside of college life. I'd say this experience even gave me the confidence to come back to Jones County and work with the coalition, Rotary, and my position at United Way."
