⚖️ TODAY IN LEGAL HISTORY | AUGUST 21, 1878

75 Lawyers. 20 States. One Organization That Would Help Shape the American Legal Profession.

On August 21, 1878, 75 lawyers from 20 states and the District of Columbia gathered in Saratoga Springs, New York, to establish the American Bar Association (ABA).

Their goal was ambitious: to advance jurisprudence, promote the administration of justice, encourage uniformity in legislation, and elevate standards of integrity and professional conduct within the legal profession.

What began with that relatively small gathering would grow into an organization deeply connected to the development of the American legal profession.

⚖️ WHY IT MATTERS

The practice of law has changed dramatically since 1878—and so has the path to becoming a lawyer.

Over the decades, the ABA has played an important role in professional ethics, continuing legal education, and standards for law schools and legal education.

And the profession continues to evolve. Today's lawyers pursue careers in civil rights, criminal justice, business, technology, healthcare, entertainment, environmental law, government, public interest and countless other fields.

🎓 Could YOU be part of the legal profession's next generation?

For nearly six decades, CLEO has helped talented students explore legal careers, prepare for law school and succeed in legal education.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity, preparation, representation and access are not. ⚖️✨

CLEO was proud to bring that message to Mosaic on the Vineyard, where Angela Cox opened Sunday Supper with “Passing the Plate,” a conversation about passing opportunity from one generation to the next. 🤝

Since 1968, CLEO has helped talented students explore legal careers, prepare for law school, succeed in legal education and pursue their professional goals. 🎓

We are grateful for the conversations and connections made on Martha’s Vineyard as we continue building pathways for the next generation. 💙🌟

“Passing the plate can mean passing opportunity from one generation to the next.”

Angela Cox, CLEO’s Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors, opened Sunday Supper at Mosaic on the Vineyard by highlighting the importance of access to legal education and the preparation, mentorship and support students need throughout their journey.

When talented students have the opportunity to pursue their goals, the impact can extend beyond one person. It can create economic mobility, strengthen families and communities, and prepare people to lead, advocate and serve.

Thank you to Christal Jackson and the Mosaic Genius team for creating space for this important conversation.

This evening, CLEO’s Angela Cox will set the table for Sunday Supper at Mosaic on the Vineyard with a powerful question:

“Who are we preparing to inherit the responsibility of leadership in our communities?”

“Passing the Plate” will invite guests to consider what we can pass forward: opportunity, knowledge, relationships, confidence, a door held open and a place at the table.
