Club Co-Presidents McKayla Braden and Anne Dremluk joined the other District Presidents on the special tour of the British Embassy gardens. Lynn Wilson, District II Director, organized the event for the District presidents and board members. Nancy Hawkins is the District Asst. Director and Gail Secrist is the District Recording Secretary.

Keep outside lights off this weekend as the bird migration continues.

🐦 🐦 Last night, millions of birds were on the move north and northeast across the Mid-Atlantic and adjacent regions. Across the whole Lower 48, it is estimated that 100 million birds were migrating. The highest concentrations were in western parts of the Mid-Atlantic into the Ohio Valley, the Southeast, and southern Plains.

The map here — BirdCast, from Cornell Lab of Ornithology — shows where nocturnal bird migration is happening, as detected by Doppler radars across the country. It shows how many birds are in flight and which direction they are headed. Warmer colors are where bird migration is the highest. The colors indicate only birds in flight, so numbers are typically higher when considering those on the ground.

The forecast calls for significant migration to continue through the weekend.

While the population of eastern migratory monarch butterflies remains far below the long-term average, there’s some hopeful news to share today: according to this year’s WWF-Mexico-led survey, monarch butterfly colonies occupied 7.24 acres of forest compared to 4.42 acres the winter before (the survey took place during the 2025-2026 winter).

Our club collaborated with Nepenthe Gallery in Alexandria to present floral interpretations of the stunning art currently on display. Six of our designers presented their beautiful designs: Patsie, Marcia, Carla, Linda, Gail and Angelita.

💦 We’re making a splash across D.C.! The National Park Service is launching a city-wide effort to restore historic fountains, rehabilitate landscapes, and upgrade park infrastructure across Washington, D.C. This work will bring beloved water features back to life, modernize systems, conserve stone and sculpture, and improve public spaces for residents and visitors alike — all in time for America’s 250th anniversary celebration! 🌟💧

🛠️ Expect phased work at multiple locations throughout the city. Some areas may experience temporary closures, but we’ll be sharing updates as progress continues.

📍 From Bolivar Park (pictured) to the John Paul Jones Memorial and beyond, these investments help keep our parks safe, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone.

Yacht Haven Garden Club members and guests enjoyed a festive holiday luncheon and gift exchange at the MVCC. Party planners Marcia and Karen outdid themselves with yet another great event. Santa even visited to greet us!
