Heads up, Louisianians!

SB 112, the School Released Time Education Act, has passed the Senate and is now quickly advancing in the House. This is the bill that would allow public schools to release students during the school day for off-campus religious instruction, and even allow that off-campus religious instruction to count towards academic course credit.

Released time for religious instruction (RTRI) programs do not belong in public schools, which exist to educate students in science, mathematics, history, literature, and the arts. RTRI programs put children at an academic disadvantage and disrupt the school day, sow division between students, and blur the vital line between church and state.

Families who wish to provide their children with religious education have every right to do so-through houses of worship, after-school programs, Sunday school, and home instruction. It is not the role of the state to supplement private religious instruction on public school time. If existing religious education programs are not meeting families’ needs, that is a conversation for congregations and communities to have: not a gap for public schools to fill.

Take just one moment now to tell your Louisiana House Members to reject RTRI!
