🏘️ Fairfax County to prioritize consideration of new 'suburban village center' concept

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors directed staff Tuesday to prioritize work on a new “suburban village center” designation for some shopping and activity centers. The concept could allow case-by-case mixed-use redevelopment, including medium-intensity housing, in transit-ready commercial areas near lower-density neighborhoods.

🎉 Long-awaited splash pad to open in Del Ray in early September, city says

Alexandria plans to open the Del Ray Gateway/Colasanto Interactive Fountain the week of Sept. 7 at Mount Vernon and Commonwealth avenues. The long-awaited spray park replaces the former Colasanto Pool and will operate through October, after a postponed opening earlier this year.

Alexandria is moving closer to modernizing the design guidelines that help protect the character of Old Town and the Parker-Gray Historic District.

At a well-attended public meeting Wednesday, residents heard how the proposed updates could make the rules easier to search, more accessible and better suited to modern needs—from EV chargers and utility meters to porches, decks and small accessory structures.

The goal is not to rewrite Alexandria’s preservation standards, planners said, but to make a decades-old system clearer, more consistent and more efficient while safeguarding the details that make our historic neighborhoods special.

Public comment on the first 11 draft chapters remains open through Sept. 2, with BAR adoption hearings anticipated in October. Read the full story and find links to the draft guidelines at thezebra.org.
