Small-home memory care does not mean limited access to outside providers. In this photo, Dr. Aliyat Yimam, PT, DPT, shares a warm moment with one of our residents during a visit to Tilden. Dr. Yimam, co-founder of Virginian Physical Therapy and Staffing, has worked with Tilden since we opened. Families are always free to choose the outside providers they prefer. Tilden welcomes physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, wound care nurses, podiatrists, dentists, and other professionals who can visit residents in the comfort of the home. Because we are small, visiting providers can get to know our residents, caregivers, and routines. That familiarity makes it easier to share observations and ideas, supporting more connected and individualized care. We are grateful for the warmth and expertise Dr. Yimam brings to every visit.

I attended the annual Springfield Bridge Walk on Saturday and had a great time representing Burgoyne Training.

One thing I heard again and again from people I talked with: “I know I should get stronger / exercise more / take better care of myself. I just need to get to it.”

Fitness ends up on a long list of important things we'll get to... eventually. So how do we make "eventually" become today? It often doesn't require a huge effort, but can be just a nudge. Set one healthy practice in motion. Then suddenly time is on your side, instead of against you, because small efforts accumulate. And you start building momentum. AND it immediately feels great to be doing something.

If you've been meaning to get started and could use a nudge, message me for a free consultation. I’d be glad to help you figure out a realistic first step.

United Community's inaugural ALX South Block Party brought South Alexandria and southeast Fairfax County together this past Saturday for an afternoon packed with food, entertainment, activities, and community resources.

Held at Bryant High School, the event featured more than 40 vendors, live music and a DJ, a free Zumba class, face painting, crafts, raffles, health information, a Touch-a-Truck experience with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, and plenty of opportunities for families to connect with local businesses and organizations.

We were especially glad to see several Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber members taking part, including Chalkboard Wings & BBQ, Dishes of India Indian Restaurant serving Alexandria and Washington DC, Burke & Herbert Bank, and of course United Community, which organized the event.

From local food and giveaways to family activities and community services, there was a lot happening throughout the day.

Congratulations to United Community on a successful first ALX South Block Party and on creating another way to bring neighbors, businesses, and community partners together.

Another great Springfield Bridge Walk! 🇺🇸

Today, community members, local businesses, elected officials, veterans, and representatives from Fort Belvoir came together for the annual Franconia Springfield Community Bridge Walk, celebrating the longstanding relationship between Fort Belvoir and the surrounding community.

The walk began at Springfield Plaza and continued to American Legion Post 176 Springfield, VA, where one of the highlights of the morning was the renewal and signing of the Community Covenant, reaffirming the partnership between Fort Belvoir and the community.

Thank you to Supervisor Rodney Lusk for leading today’s program. We were also pleased to be joined by Delegate Garrett McGuire, Delegate Kathy Tran, representatives from Rep. James Walkinshaw’s office, and Fort Belvoir leaders, service members, veterans, and military families.

It was especially fitting to recognize two World War II veterans in attendance: Ed Kesler, a 100-year-old U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Theater, and Dan Palenski, a 99-year-old U.S. Army veteran who served in Saipan. Both were presented with plaques during today’s program in recognition of their service.

We also appreciate American Legion Post 176 Commander Jay Byrum, VFW Post 7327 Commander Steve Williams, the Fairfax County Police Department, Springfield Civic Association, Fairfax County Park Authority, and the many organizations and volunteers who helped make today’s event possible.

It was great to see several Chamber members participating as vendors and connecting with the community, including Julie DMV Homes , ECHO, School of Rock Springfield, VA, Burgoyne Training and The Joint Chiropractic. Thank you for coming out and being part of the celebration!

Following the ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy food, business and community displays, and live entertainment, including the veteran-led Washington Tattoo and Grammy-nominated blues artist Duwayne Burnside.

The Chamber was proud to once again be part of the Bridge Walk and celebrate the connection between Fort Belvoir, our local businesses, and the greater Springfield community.

Tomorrow, August 22, is the annual Springfield Bridge Walk. Since 2009, the Fort Belvoir Garrison, Franconia-Springfield residents, businesses, and elected officials have walked across Veterans Bridge (Amherst Avenue) to commemorate the renewal of the United States Army's Community Covenant. Join us at 9:30 a.m. at the FedEx Store (6998 Bland Street) to begin the walk at 10 a.m.

After the walk, enjoy a community celebration at the American Legion Post 176 (6520 Amherst Avenue), featuring community organizations, vendors, and entertainment by the Washington Tattoo and Grammy-nominated blues artist Duwayne Burnside.

The Bridge Walk is especially significant because we are honoring our good friends from Fort Belvoir by renewing the Community Covenant, demonstrating our commitment to building a stronger community.
