We love getting out to visit our members! Recently, NYSHFA | NYSCAL’s Melony Spock + Lisa Volk had the pleasure of visiting The Pines at Catskill, where Administrator Amanda Coppolo welcomed them and shared her passion for creating an environment where both residents and staff thrive. As we met team members throughout the building, it was easy to see that commitment in action. The staff genuinely enjoy what they do, and their dedication to providing exceptional care was apparent in every interaction.

Amanda, a graduate of the NYSHFA | NYSCAL Administrator Training Program, is committed to continuously improving quality while fostering a collaborative team environment. She also recognizes the importance of keeping residents connected to the community. A recent community picnic brought together residents with local EMS, the fire department, police, and other community partners, providing a wonderful opportunity to build relationships and strengthen community connections.

Thank you to Amanda and the entire team at The Pines at Catskill for the warm welcome. We always appreciate the opportunity to visit our members and see firsthand the incredible work happening across New York’s long-term care communities every day.

NYSHFA | NYSCAL's President & CEO, Stephen Hanse, Esq., continues to advocate for Haitian TPS holders working across New York's long-term care communities.

In an August 14 letter to U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, Stephen Hanse urged the federal government to protect affected Haitian nursing aides while they pursue legal pathways to remain in the United States.

“Any significant reduction in the available workforce would make it more difficult to serve current and new residents, causing a ripple effect that could overwhelm our local hospitals and the entire healthcare system.”

This is about workforce. It's about access to care. And it's about the residents who depend on both.

Approximately 7,000 Haitian TPS holders work as nursing assistants + direct caregivers in New York, serving some of our most vulnerable residents.

Hundreds of Haitian immigrants working in Long Island nursing homes have been forced out of their jobs, an advocate group said.

“New York has the highest share of immigrant direct care workers of any state, with 40,000 Haitian TPS holders—7,000 of whom work as nursing assistants and direct caregivers," Stephen Hanse, president and CEO of the NYSHFA | NYSCAL, said in a letter to Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

is home to one of the nation’s fastest-growing older adult populations, and are already struggling to meet rigorous state staffing requirements.
