Progressives need to get out of their own way. The California Governor’s primary was a total sh*tshow — but the ultimate failure belongs to Katie Porter.
By selfishly staying in the race, with no chance to win, she split the progressive vote, and prevented Tom Steyer from defeating the spineless, DNC-backed, Chevron-funded centrist Xavier Becerra.
Democrat candidates who accept money from fossil fuel companies must be stopped at all costs. Xavier Becerra is a prime example, accepting massive donations from Chevron, PG&E, and other villainous actors.
Tom Steyer was far from a perfect candidate. But he was the most progressive, and he had a real chance to win. Porter should have stepped aside and endorsed him, to unite the progressive bloc and prevent a corrupt, spineless democrat from taking the helm of the world’s fourth largest economy. But Katie Porter didn't have the integrity to do that.
To build power, the left needs to give up purity-political infighting, and be pragmatic. Sometimes this means stepping aside so someone else can win, even an imperfect candidate like Steyer.
Shame on you,
Let this be a lesson to all progressive candidates. Selfishly staying in a race will lose you the respect of your base. 🖕
*** But let's not forget — the system is rigged against us. 🔥 We have to organize for ranked-choice voting in California now. 🔥 That will be absolutely key for the West Coast to have wins like Zohran in NYC, and build real progressive political power.
