Last week, we held an orientation session at Holy Family School in Calaba Town for the Year 3 Senior Secondary students, who are preparing to sit for the WASSCE exams and complete their high school journey πŸŽ“βœ¨

The event welcomed a keynote speaker, a university orator, who shared valuable insights on the different pathways for tertiary education, including college, university, and vocational training options πŸ“šπŸ«. He also provided historical context on higher education in Sierra Leone, highlighting how Freetown became home to the first university in West Africa, paving the way for expanded educational opportunities today.

In addition, the session covered practical information such as application procedures, subject requirements for various faculties, tuition fees, and other key considerations for students planning their next steps πŸ“πŸ’‘.

We were also honored to welcome former students who returned to Holy Family School to share their personal journeys. They spoke about the skills they developed, the challenges they overcame, and the decisions that shaped their successful careersβ€”offering inspiration and motivation to the current students .

It was a truly impactful session, and we hope it has encouraged our students to stay focused, aim higher, and confidently pursue their dreams beyond secondary school πŸš€

🌍 Celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace πŸ’ͺ🏿

Today, we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by sharing some wonderful memories from the sports activities in Madina Tabai. πŸ“Έβœ¨

From lively running competitions to joyful group games, these moments capture the energy, excitement, and togetherness that sport brings to everyday life. πŸ˜„

Sport has a unique power β€” it creates connection, encourages inclusion, and brings people together across generations and backgrounds. It helps reduce isolation and opens up spaces where dialogue, solidarity, and mutual respect can grow.

In Madina Tabai, these values come to life through every game played and every smile shared. πŸ’›

🌍✨ A Memorable First Adventure for Holy Family School Children! ✨🌍

Just a few weeks ago, the children of Holy Family School in Tabai experienced their very first field trip β€” and what an unforgettable journey it was! For many of them, this was their first time leaving their villages to explore a bigger city: Makeni.

During their visit, the children explored St. Joseph and St. Francis Secondary Schools, where friendly students guided them around and introduced them to their laboratories. πŸ§ͺπŸ“š

The adventure continued at the Madam Vocational Institute, where the children got hands-on experience with mechanical activities, as well as learning about hotel management and IT. πŸ”§πŸ’»πŸ¨

They also visited the District Council, where they were introduced to an inspiring education project, and made a brief stop at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Education to learn how it operates.

It was a day full of discovery, learning, and inspiration β€” a truly eye-opening experience for these young minds before heading back home. πŸ’›

Happy Women's day! 🌼

In such important reoccurrence, we are here to share the story of one of the beneficiaries of our projects:

Madam Baby Kenneh is the record keeper of the Ngoyeila Village Savings and Loan Association in Mbelebu.
The group once struggled with irregular meetings, low attendance, and poorly kept loan records that undermined trust and caused losses.
Through the TEUSL project, AVSI trained members in leadership, financial literacy, record-keeping, and the value of saving and investing.
Elected for her reliability, Madam Kenneh introduced accurate registers and restored transparency. Attendance improved and confidence returned.
Madam Kenneh also applied these practices to her small business, improving management and household stability - showing how trusted, trained women can help communities thrive πŸ’ͺ🏿

Peace is a humble path. Let's walk it together, with women. πŸ•ŠοΈβ€οΈ

🌍✨ We were delighted to take part in the Global NGO Week celebrations at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown!

The enlightening sessions brought together diverse panellists from various NGOs, led by the Deputy Minister of Energy 1. They shared how, across different thematic areas, they are implementing impactful projects that promote climate action and clean cooking solutions.
The panel sparked meaningful conversations about how clean energy is improving health outcomes, supporting pregnant women, strengthening agriculture, and creating better learning environments for children. The interactive Q&A session was a true highlight, as partners shared experiences, asked thoughtful questions, and reminded us that real, lasting change happens through collaboration.
We’re proud to be part of a strong network working toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Sierra Leone πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡±

It was also wonderful reconnecting with partners we’ve collaborated with on initiatives like Endev Clean Cooking and TEUSL, and reflecting on the positive impact we continue to make together.

Leh Wi Grow … Early Care, Early Learn, Stronger Roots 🌱

On Thursday, 19th February, AVSI Sierra Leone and its long-standing partner Family Homes Movement (FHM) marked an important milestone with the launch of a new project dedicated to child protection.

The event took place at the FHM compound β€” a deeply symbolic location where the collaboration between the two organizations first began. Over the past 28 years, AVSI and FHM have worked together to provide safe homes and brighter futures for vulnerable children. Today, they continue that shared commitment through β€œLeh We Grow … Early Care, Early Learn, Stronger Roots.”

As the title suggests, this project is a call to action for all of us. It reminds us that raising children is a shared responsibility. By bringing together families, educators, communities, and institutions, we can work in harmony to strengthen early care and learning β€” building solid foundations that will help children grow into confident, capable adults. 🌿

On 29 and 30 January in Calaba Town, joy filled the air as music and sports activities organized by Holy Family School brought children and families together. 🎢⚽
Four houses competed in a variety of sports and games, actively involving the youngest participants and drawing enthusiastic support from adults cheering them on.
The Distance Support Program (DSP) proudly supports this annual event, which for decades has brought the entire community together for two days of sports, celebration, and shared joy. πŸ’™πŸ†

Through our Distance Support Program (DSP), we address the multiple barriers that limit school attendance, including challenges related to education, health, and overall well-being. For this reason, each year, 40 girls from Junior and Senior Secondary School receive a reusable sanitary pad kit containing two reusable pads, a bar of soap, and a washing cloth. This support ensures reliable access to menstrual products, helping girls attend school regularly and with confidence. πŸ’ͺ🏾

This approach combines care for girls’ health and dignity with a responsible choice that limits waste and supports a more sustainable environment. πŸ’œπŸŒ±

⚑️ International day of Clean Energy

Clean and reliable energy is more than a climate solution β€” it’s a pathway to better lives. Renewable energy powers schools and health facilities, supports local businesses, reduces pollution, and offers families safer, more sustainable alternatives to traditional fuels. 🌱
By investing in clean energy, we helped communities strengthen their resilience, protect the environment, and create new opportunities for social and economic growth. A brighter, cleaner future is possible β€” and it starts with the power we choose today. 🌍✨
