The training was organized by The Carter Center, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Sierra Leone Association of Women in Journalism

The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of journalists and media actors to report on mental health issues ethically, accurately, and responsibly, while avoiding harmful narratives that may criminalize or stigmatize persons living with mental health conditions.

The training convened journalists from various media institutions nationwide, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Information, Youth Mental Health Champions, and key civil society organizations.

Over the two days, participants engaged in interactive and practical sessions on:

✅ Common mental health conditions including psychosis, depression, and anxiety
✅ Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders
✅ Key terms and expressions to avoid in media reporting

The sessions were facilitated by experienced experts from Liberia, Burundi, and Sierra Leone, offering both regional and local perspectives that enriched discussions and strengthened learning.

The European Union in Sierra Leone funded Project has proven to be more than an intervention, it has now become a movement of hope, empowerment, and opportunity for young people in Falaba District.

In a region often challenged by limited access to youth employment opportunities, skills development, and youth-focused investments, the project has delivered tangible results that are already reshaping the socio-economic future of communities.

Through the Project, young people, particularly marginalized youth and young women have gained access to practical vocational skills, entrepreneurship mentorship, and structured leadership development opportunities.

Many beneficiaries who previously faced uncertainty and unemployment now demonstrate increased confidence, stronger decision-making capacity, and a clear sense of purpose.

The project has helped young people shift from being seen as “job seekers” to becoming problem-solvers, innovators, and contributors to local development.

One of the most remarkable outcomes of the project in Falaba is the growing number of youth who have moved into income-generating activities and emerging entrepreneurship pathways. Young people supported through training, mentorship, and business guidance are now taking steps toward financial independence and resilience.

For many youth in Falaba, has been their first real opportunity to access structured support for enterprise development, enabling them to transition from dependency into productivity.

The project has significantly strengthened youth leadership structures and promoted responsible civic engagement. Young people in Falaba District are now more actively participating in community development processes, dialogues, and decision-making spaces. This has enhanced trust between young people, traditional authorities, local leadership, and development stakeholders.

The project has empowered youth to see themselves not as spectators of development, but as leaders and partners in shaping it.

The project has made deliberate efforts to ensure inclusion, especially for young women and vulnerable groups. By increasing women’s participation in leadership and skills development, YouLead has contributed to shifting harmful social norms and expanding opportunities for girls and young women to thrive.

Communities are increasingly recognizing that empowering young women is not just a social obligation, it is a strategic investment in the future of Falaba District.

Beyond the immediate beneficiaries, the Project has created a ripple effect across families and communities. Parents, community leaders, and local stakeholders report improved youth behavior, renewed commitment to personal development, and stronger community cohesion.

In many communities, YouLead has restored hope, especially for youth who once believed that meaningful opportunities only existed outside Falaba.

The project has also strengthened local collaboration and institutional coordination, building stronger relationships between youth groups, community stakeholders, and local authorities. This has created a sustainable platform for continued youth development programming in Falaba District.

’s implementation approach has ensured that the project is not viewed as an external initiative, but as a community owned development process, grounded in local realities and local leadership.

The Project has demonstrated that when youth are given the right tools, support systems, and opportunities, they do not only change their own lives, they transform entire communities.

With support from the EU and Christian Aid Ireland In Falaba District, YouLead has:
* strengthened youth leadership,
* expanded pathways for employment and entrepreneurship,
* increased inclusion and gender equity,
* reduced vulnerability to poverty and risky behaviors,
* and empowered young people to become active drivers of development.

The impact of the YouLead Project provides clear evidence that the European Union’s investment in youth development is yielding real and measurable returns, and Falaba District is now witnessing a new generation of empowered youth who are ready to contribute to national development and sustainable peace.

However, the demand for youth empowerment support in Falaba remains significant. Many more young people are eager to access training, mentorship, start-up support, and leadership development opportunities.

With expanded EU and other support, Falaba can become a model district for rural youth transformation, showing how strategic investment can unlock the full potential of young people, reduce poverty, and promote inclusive growth.

extends profound appreciation to the European Union and Christian Aid for believing in the youth of Falaba District. The Project has not only created outcomes, but has ignited ambition, restored dignity, and built a foundation for sustainable youth-led development.

Falaba is ready. Its youth are ready.
And with the EU’s continued partnership, the success story of YouLead can be scaled beyond Falaba to inspire transformation across Sierra Leone and beyond.

Together, we are not only developing youth, we are building the future of the next generation..

Global Youth Network for Empowerment & Development - Sierra Leone Joins Over 150 Youth-Led Organizations to Advance Youth Empowerment in Sierra Leone 🇸🇱.

Today, proudly joined over 150 youth-led and youth-serving organizations at a powerful One-Day Youth Stakeholders Engagement convened under the theme:

“Advancing Advocacy and Leveraging Expertise for Youth Empowerment in Sierra Leone.”

The high-level engagement organized by the National Youth Commission Sierra Leone in collaboration with the National Youth Sector Caucus, brought together youth actors, civil society leaders and government institutions to strengthen youth coordination, policy influence, and collective action across Sierra Leone.

A major highlight of the event was NAYCOM’s presentation of its Strategic Plan, structured around five (5) key strategic pillars, alongside its Annual Work Plan, aimed at delivering inclusive youth development results nationwide.

Importantly, NAYCOM strongly emphasized the urgent need for enhanced coordination, structured engagement, and effective collaboration with youth-led organizations and development partners to ensure impactful implementation.

Key Strategic Statements from National Leaders & Youth Stakeholders

Mr. Tejan Z. Kellah – National Youth Council President reaffirmed the National Youth Council’s commitment to unifying youth voices, calling for youth to move beyond fragmentation and embrace solidarity, noting that:

“Youth empowerment must be driven by coordinated advocacy, responsible leadership, and youth-led solutions that reflect the realities of our communities.”

Mrs. Abigail Stevens – Executive Director of Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities CCYA, emphasized the importance of structured youth engagement and stronger institutional partnerships, stressing that:

“Youth-serving agencies must not compete for space but rather collaborate for impact, ensuring programs are inclusive, measurable, and aligned with national priorities.”

Our Executive Director, Mr. Musa Khalil Koroma – who is Chairman of the National Youth Sector Caucus, speaking on behalf of the Caucus, highlighted the critical role youth-led organizations play in national development and called for deeper trust and investment in youth expertise:

“Youth-led organizations are not beneficiaries of development, but partners in development. Therefore, our expertise, networks, and community trust must be leveraged for national impact.”

He further emphasized that effective youth empowerment requires policy influence, sustainable financing, and a unified youth coordination architecture.

Mr. Eric Massallay – Director, NGO Affairs, Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MOPED) commended NAYCOM and youth organizations for their growing contributions and encouraged stronger compliance, coordination, collaboration, transparency, and partnership with government systems, noting that:

“Youth organizations must be seen as credible development actors, as strong coordination, accountability, and alignment with national development frameworks and priorities will enhance trust and donor confidence.”

Mr. Alphonso Manley – Executive Director, Civil Right Coalition delivered a strong advocacy message on civic accountability and youth inclusion, stressing that:

“Youth empowerment must go beyond events and slogans. It must translate into policy action, social justice, and youth representation in governance and national decision-making.”

The keynote Statement was delivered by Mr. Patrick M. Gibrilla – Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to youth development and called for shared responsibility, stating clearly that:

“The future of Sierra Leone depends on how we invest in young people today. Government cannot do it alone, youth-led organizations must be recognized as strategic partners in delivering national youth priorities.”

He further encouraged youth stakeholders to build a culture of innovation, discipline, and results-driven engagement.

The vote of thanks was done by Mr. Mohamed B. Koroma – Executive Director, Centre for Partnership Initiatives - CPI, and Secretary General, of the National Youth Sector Caucus. He appreciated NAYCOM and all partners for the engagement and urged stakeholders to remain committed to collective action:

“This engagement must not end here. Let us sustain the momentum, strengthen coordination, and commit to results that young people can feel in their communities.”

Commissioner Joseph Maada Lahai called for Enhanced Coordination & Effective Collaboration with the National Youth Commission. Throughout the engagement, he strongly emphasized for:
✅ stronger collaboration between government, youth-led organizations, and development partners
✅ improved coordination platforms for youth programming
✅ shared advocacy strategies and harmonized youth development interventions
✅ meaningful youth participation in planning, implementation, and evaluation
✅ increased investment and recognition of youth-led expertise

The engagement is a timely and strategic step toward building a unified national youth ecosystem where youth voices are not only heard but respected, coordinated, and empowered to drive change.

At @ , we believe the outcomes of the meeting will contribute to stronger advocacy, improved collaboration, and more impactful youth development programming across Sierra Leone, especially in underserved communities.

When youth stakeholders coordinate effectively, the results are transformational.

📌 Together, we can move from fragmented efforts to collective impact.
📌 Together, we can turn youth potential into national progress.
📌 Together, we can advance a Sierra Leone where every youth and young person has opportunity, dignity, and a future.
