🌍🌿 Youth Climate Action Accelerator Project in Sierra Leone! 🌿🌍

Plan International Sierra Leone (PISL) wrapped up a successful 5-day Inception Workshop for the Youth Climate Action Accelerator Project! 🌱✨ With a strong focus on empowering young people, this project aims to create climate-resilient communities in Freetown.

🚀 What Happened:

Partnered with Freetown City Council, C40 Cities, Slum Dwellers Federation, and UN-Habitat.
Youth-led organizations took center stage in driving local climate initiatives.
Field visits to Krab Town highlighted impactful mangrove planting and reforestation efforts.
Productive collaboration with Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr to boost project support.

With these solid partnerships and community engagement, young people are leading efforts to tackle climate challenges like flooding and erosion in Freetown! 🌍💪

We are excited to announce the successful visit of Bridges Outcomes Partnerships' Eduardo O'Connell and Andres to Plan Sierra Leone! As the donor of the Education Outcome Fund (EOF) project, this visit marked an important step in building relationships and discussing key aspects of the program, focussing on mobilisation and MERL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning).

Their visit included a meeting with our Country Office team, field visits to ECD centres in Port Loko, and a collaborative breakfast meeting with our partners BRAC and ChildFund to map out strategies for joint implementation. The positive connections and enthusiasm for the outcome-based financing model are key to driving success! 💼🌍

In celebration of the International Day of the Girl, Plan International hosted a one-day conference in Port Loko with the theme "Girls' Vision for the Future." The event gave girls a platform to step into leadership roles and share their aspirations for a brighter future! 💪✨
Discussions focused on the newly passed Child Marriage Act of 2024, promoting gender equality, and protecting girls' rights. Interim Plan Manager, N'yillah M. Kabia, encouraged girls to embrace leadership and seize opportunities, reaffirming our commitment to girls' empowerment in underserved communities. 🌸🌍

🌟 Reflecting on the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child in Port Loko!
On this special day, several inspiring young girls took charge of key leadership roles across the city, stepping into positions such as City Mayor, Deputy Chief Administrator, Program Manager, and Regent Chief of Beke Loko Chiefdom. 🙌
Aminata, who served as both Regent and Section Chief, delivered a powerful introduction of the End to Child Marriage Act, highlighting the importance of educating girls and ensuring they mature before marriage. She emphasized, "When girls are educated and allowed to mature, they contribute economically and help lift their families and communities out of poverty." 💪👧
The event concluded with a dynamic Girls' Conference, where young leaders passionately discussed gender equality and the need for collective action. We’re proud of these changemakers leading the way for a brighter future! ✨👩‍🏫

October 11 marked a historic day for girls in Mano, Dasse Chiefdom, as they took part in one of two major celebrations in Moyamba District for the International Day of the Girl Child. Plan International Sierra Leone, alongside the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and Restless Development, hosted a powerful event where girls stepped into traditional leadership roles such as Paramount Chiefs and Mammy Queens.
These young leaders collaborated with local chiefs to develop and sign community bye-laws aimed at protecting children and advancing gender equality. 💫 Their bold leadership and vision showcased the immense potential of girls to drive lasting change.
While Mano was making history, Gandorhun, the Fakunya Chiefdom, was also hosting an event full of inspiring moments. Together, these events show the strength and determination of girls across Moyamba! 🌟

Did you know that on October 11 2024, two powerful events took place in different locations within Moyamba District to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child? One of these inspiring celebrations happened in the community of Gandorhun, Fakunya Chiefdom.

In Gandorhun, Plan International Sierra Leone, together with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and Restless Development, organized a historic event where girls stepped into leadership roles as Paramount Chiefs and Mammy Queens. These courageous girls, many from our sponsorship programs, showcased their potential as future leaders. 💫

The day was filled with media engagements and a thought-provoking symposium where the girls pushed forward the agenda for gender equality and child protection. In collaboration with community chiefs, they also developed and signed important community byelaws aimed at protecting children and promoting gender equity.

✨To provide adolescents with quality sexuality education and enhance teachers' knowledge of adolescent-responsive SRHR information, Plan International SL through the My Health, My Rights Project in Port Loko is conducting a five-day training for 48 secondary school teachers from 16 operational communities. 💫

This training, scheduled from September 10th to 14th, focuses on Child and Adolescent Health and Life Skills (CAHLS).
The sessions are facilitated by trained School Quality Assurance Officers, supported by project staff.
Together we are creating an environment where community leaders have access to SRHR information and where every girl can access SRHR services. 🤝💪

✨Over the past three months, the Education Interrupted Program(EUP) project has empowered youth-driven initiatives. As the project comes to an end, we held an end-of-year Learning Review Meeting to evaluate the progress and impact of the EUP project. This review meeting allowed us to assess the effectiveness of the youth-driven initiatives, identify key successes and challenges, and gather insights that can be used to improve the program's implementation in subsequent projects.

By reflecting on lessons learned, we aim to enhance the capacity of youth participants, optimize resource utilization, and strengthen the overall outcomes of the project, ensuring that it continues to contribute to inclusive quality education, resilience, and community development.💪🤝

An impactful exchange learning visit was hosted by , where representatives from Liberia and Sierra Leone gathered to share experiences and strategies for child advocacy. This important event focused on strengthening regional cooperation and empowering young people across both nations.

Key attendees included Hon. Garmai S. Tokpah, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection - Liberia , the Country Leadership Team of Plan Sierra Leone, UNICEF representatives, A rep from the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs-SL and the Children's Forum Network from both countries.

Plan International Sierra Leone, in partnership with Open University (OU), is wrapping up its impactful Teacher Training for Inclusive Girls’ Education (TTIGE) project in Kailahun District. Over the past 4 years, we've tackled critical challenges in education, from gender disparities to teacher shortages and compounded effects of public health crises on girls education.📚
As the project comes to an end, a project learning review meeting was held to identify what went well and what could be improved. The learning review also captured lessons learned, reflect on the processes, outcomes and overall project management practices to enhance future performances and successes.✨💪

Over the past few days, we’ve delved deep into our programming directions, project management approaches, and overall country management strategies. The engagement and insightful discussions with our internal teams have been invaluable, helping us reflect on partner feedback and our own perspectives.

Key highlights include:

Plan International Sierra Leone recently hosted a strategic 2-day workshop where we presented our Country Strategy Evaluation Report to a diverse group of stakeholders. This included women, civil society organizations, program participants, Plan staff, partners, young people, and key government ministries such as MOGCA, MBSSE, MOYA, and MSW.💫

This workshop was an invaluable platform for all partners to share their views on the what, why, how, and who of our programs, aligning with our global strategy and Sierra Leone’s development goals.

Together, we discussed and brainstormed solutions to the pressing challenges facing children, girls, and young people in Sierra Leone. 🤝

We’re committed to taking these valuable recommendations forward as we continue to strive for a just world that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.💪
